Anyone using one?

Either a home base or a mobile rig?

My current rig is a CRT One N which is a neat little radio, punches way above its weight.

Also have a linear for use as a pre-amp.

Personally, I like having a mobile rig, gives the chance to chat with different folks when driving around, whereas with a home base, you are limited to the same people within range.

Only been into it for about 6 months but have found it to be a fun hobby, almost like the internet when it was "new" which I know is a contradiction seeing how old the CB technology is.

Pretty sure you still technically need a licence to operate one, although back in my teens/early 20's when I had a rig, I think hardly anyone paid their dues! Ahhh the days of 27.555, a Sirio 2012 and linears ;) :D

I got into Amateur Radio after that to do DX legally but haven't touched either for over 10 years. I do wish I hadn't sold my last setup (TS-950 I think it was).

CB used to be good, friends and I met plenty of girls on it and I'm still in touch with a few people I met now.

I was tempted, but what are the laws on using one? Listening, speaking etc and all that?

Am I being too paranoid?

https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q659.htm

It is an offence to use a hand held mobile phone or an "interactive communications device", but there is an exemption for a two way radio which is designed or adapted -
for the purpose of transmitting and receiving spoken messages; and
operates on any frequency other than 880 MHz to 915 MHz, 925 MHz to 960 MHz, 1710 MHz to 1785 MHz, 1805 MHz to 1880 MHz, 1900 MHz to 1980 MHz or 2110 MHz to 2170 MHz.

Ofcom states that you should be transmitting CB in the 27MHz range, if you are, you come within the exception and are OK. The exception was created because so many government and private organisations (e.g. taxis) use 2 way radios.

However, there is strong scientific evidence that any such activity (including fiddling with your CD player etc.) does raise the level of danger so far as accidents are concerned, so it is recommended that you do whatever you can to minimise use of transmitter buttons, tuning devices and volume controls. If something akin to hands free exists it would be a good idea. Note also that even if the device you are using does not fall within the mobile phone legislation, with or without hands free, if you are driving badly, you can also be prosecuted for careless driving or dangerous driving, which carry much higher penalties. If you kill someone in an accident caused by phoning or texting or using a CB etc. you can expect a lengthy sentence of imprisonment.

Short answer, Yes, you can use when while driving as long as you are driving safe.

Yes, 20 or so years ago when I used one I had to have a broadcasting licence. Something like £4. Only able to broadcast on UK-40 - midband and other bands were illegal then.

I used to have one too, a modded Uniden Uniace 100 and had some random mid-band rig. Every time I used to key up the TV used to get interference. Probably something to do with the 500w burner I ran on the 50' aerial.

Me and my mates used to ride around on our pushbikes with handhelds and then had them in our bedrooms and eventually cars.

People mock now but was really the early day social media. Great fun and met some great (and unbelievably weird) people through it. Always remember 2 or 3 old people used to always meet up at a certain time for a chat on a particular channel, one of them was paralysed from the waste down and they used to talk about their day, quite sad in a way thinking that was most likely the only interaction they had all day.

I know quite a few of the local Landy crew still use them.

Not sure why a CB radio discussion was merged with a HAM thread :D

Sure all the amateur lot are happy knowing us CB lot are now one of the same :p

Some very cool stuff though.

Hoping to get my foundation licence sooner rather than later :D

Absolutely this. Actually it was more social than social media because you actually *talked* to people (gasp!). :D

Also, merging a CB thread into an Amateur Radio thread - that might ruffle a few feathers!!!

I reported the post asking it be moved back but I am not impressed being lumped with the "high and mighty" lot :p
