Cheerio 980Ti

What was it about the mid range 8800s that made them so good? I've seen a lot of people say they were their favorite cards so im guessing they were pretty special. I went for the 8800ultras and they were a bit of a let down especially considering the price i payed on release, probably didnt help that they overclocked pretty poorly even with the EKFC blocks i had on them and ofc the poor SLI scaling in some games.

What made it so special was that even tho' it was a cut down version of the 8800gtx it was a refresh card (60nm vs 90nm) , it was more efficient, cooler , smaller much better value and as said above almost the same performance of the GTX.

But ultimately the smaller fabrication process was key to its success.

Weirdly enough, i have one on the table right in front of me :D

Still remember the x800 Pro too. I replaced my 9700 pro with one. Managed to flash mine into an x800XT PE, unlocking all 16 pipes! Cranking up the settings on HL2 was an exciting moment :D

Oh I did that too! That was a steal of a card since they could be unlocked for free :)

Lol i must have been the sucker buying all the top teir cards while you guys were buying the cut down ones at bargain prices. I had the x850xtpe around that time which was like the top tier version of that line of cards, they were so hard to get hold of just like the nvidia cards which i guess is what made them so expensive, ya could get a x850xt piece of cake and same for 8800gtx but the PE and the ultra took me ages to find, i think i had to buy one of them from the US.

Saying that, when the 9800pro was the top card i bought a 9800se for about half the price of the pro and unlocked the 4 pipelines on that and overclocked it to way past pro speeds so i did managed to catch a bargain there.

Same here. Handled Far Cry with most eye candy enabled rather well. :)

Only £1000 to get great performance!

we considering the price of some of the 1080s and Titan X Pascal
and i have been running this setup for well over a year and it should be good for 1440p well into 2017 and possibly beyond its not that bad at all ;)

Last two games bought: Shadow Warrior 2 & BF1. Both hitting 100fps @ 3440*1440 ultra settings without pushing my 980ti's to the limit.

A 1080ti is unlikely to beat them, so looking like a wait for 1180ti at the earliest? Has GPU power started to hit a ceiling similar to CPU's?
