I came across this car at a local fair earlier this year, and had a good chat with the owner (old guy, retired, uses it as his daily driver!) Decided to post it here for the benefit of anyone else who appreciates the spectacular Yank tanks of the Space Age. :D

The owner told me he gets 20mpg, and the turning circle is roughly the size of Wales. :p

It was a real privilege to see this car in person. :)

Parking is the biggest issue with those old American cars. On US roads they are fine, theres loads of room. But on our roads they are so out of place.

Love it. Though i would love it more if cars like this were practicle enough for frequent use.

Still, can i have it?

That takes cool to a whole new level but I think you've gone a bit overboard in Lightroom.

It's actually Picasa, but I plead guilty! :p

Perfectly practical on our wide Australia roads, but still a nightmare to park. I just love the styling of these old cars, and I think they hit 'Peak Outrageous' with the '60 NY. :D

Incredible era for design. My dad had an old galaxy and that was just as horrendous to park :/ Thanks for sharing!

It really does highlight the difference between now and then doesn't it? In today's world we've got little 1.0 turbo engines powering family hatchbacks made out of crumple zones and not a gram of metal wasted.

Back in those days it was simply a case of "MORE METAL, MORE CUBES!"

That bootlid probably weighs as much as a Fiesta :p

My old man had an Oldsmobile when we were kids, with all the tail fins etc. And yes it had a sofa in the front as well as the back! :D

This was in Somerset as well, going down those lanes, it would be brushing up the hedges on both sides haha and if you met another car coming the other way it was a nightmare :D

We had a 1970 Ford Falcon 500 when I was a kid. Big vinyl sofa seats front and back, column shift 3 speed auto, and giant chrome bumper bars. Good times!

:D

Of course one of the big advantages old cars had over more recent models was, that with those big bumpers, it was perfectly safe (And indeed accepted practice) to "Touch" other cars when parking without writing them off! :(

The chrome was a bitch when it started to rust underneath, though. Big bubbles all over the bumper and not a thing you could do about it. :(

I was going to say 20mpg sounded very good! 12 makes much more sense

I know we got rid of ours when we were coming up to Lincolnshire a lot and then moving here and the parents didn't want to pay that much in fuel even then...and that was 1979 :D

What a beautiful machine.

Awful lot of power and torque for its age too! 350bhp and over 400 lb-ft must feel pretty brisk even with presumably very tall gearing.
