EVGA Pascal cards hotspot problem

I agree from what I've seen of various teardowns of different cards.

I can't remember if it was my GB 480 SOC or 570 SOC - but it was clear some of the memory chips - whilst had thermal pads on them were no-where near in contact with the heatsink .... you could see it just from looking

Lots of cards have issues like this, it's just very few know about them and it rarely results in widespread failure and returns.

JayzTwoCents made a video which shows exactly what needs to be done step by step to install the thermal pads. If I had an FTW card I would feel a bit better after watching this video and attempt it myself.

Clear and explained

I think Jay will be getting free EVGA cards for life after this...

Hope this helps everyone out that needs it.

My apologies if this has been posted before.

Might be worth nothing Jay's comments also as he spoke to our CEO today (More than I have in the last few weeks :))

Please see the VBIOS updates today and also if you feel the need take advantage of our free thermal pads.

I can confirm today any shipping to our UK RMA base will also be free of charge, you will be given a collection from our UK RMA team and your card will have the thermal pads installed and BOS updated.

Sorry been out at meetings today, so any questions I will try answer tomorrow.

Thanks
Ben

does the 14 day rule apply if the item either doesn't meet original spec or has a know fault ?

Card is 100% within original specification, so please do not worry on this regard.

Please note the VBIOS update and the thermal pads are all optional and only for those who feel they need to improve cooling.

EVGA are offering the updates as we feel the cards are running hotter than many of our consumers would like but it is still withing specification.

Hope this helps
Ben

I initially ordered some thermal pads for my Classified a while back, no response.

I also ordered an EVGA PowerLink when first offered quite some time ago, no response.

I have now decided to RMA my card, to be honest I don't expect to pay £750 for a top end product to be expected to remedy a known fault with a product myself with a workaround. I hear EVGA are quite rightfully providing RMA replacements for people who don't feel comfortable with dismantling their cards, so I sent the RMA request to EVGA in Earnest yesterday and am still awaiting a response.

Not an impressive customer experience to be perfectly honest so far for me from EVGA considering their good rep.

Ben can you chase up my RMA ? Will we have to pay advanced RMA charges as this is essentially a recall of a faulty product?

Thanks

from Ben and EVGAs responses - I'm not sure you could ask for better after sales support really :)

when I can afford a replacement for my Tri-X - EVGA would still be top of the list if I went Nvidia

hows 110C on vrm within specification ??

Well... I've update my primary VBIOS and the new fan curve is still very quiet and not that overly aggressive. So much for some folks thinking that the fans would be spinning at 80% ;)

On my 1070 FTW:
- Now runs passive up to around 50C, rather than the original 60C
- By 60C the fans are spinning at approx 20%
- By 70C the fans are spinning at approx 45%, was 30% originally.

Not sure above this temp, as 70C is the highest that I reached with my quick testing.

Take note that the fans are all but inaudible up to 60%

So looks to me that they have still tried to strike a balance between cooling and noise levels. Appears to me like they've managed it. Certainly doesn't sound like a hoover at gaming levels like some were worried about.

What we now want to see, is someone do some serious testing with some decent thermal test equipment, to see what effect this has on the VRMs.

As to me. I shall go back to my own custom fan curve, as this is set up to suit my case/average ambient air temp/acceptable noise levels. My curve is slightly more aggressive than the new one and maybe overkill, but it suits my personal preference/s and setup :)

PS. Though I shall still fit the "optional" thermal pads when they turn up.
