How much is too much (Alcohol)

It depends on what you drink, I cannot for life of me drink anything in that quantity apart from Guinness. Anything else just takes me out as you say "Blackout gear"

All I can drink is a good brandy and Guinness everything else just kills me. :(

I have said before I never drank for years when I was young, 6 buds and I was pasted, so am just playing catch up now! :D

Mmmm, Guinness. Probably my favourite pint to be honest.

Anyway, obviously your an adult (I guess) and can make your own decisions. but if your drinking 20 units (11 cans of Guinness????) every night, that that's definitely going to **** up your life pretty soon man :(

I'll say no more on the subject, u can do as u wish.

Thank you for not taking the moral high ground. ;)

Am 44 didn't drink until I was 37 and been drinking since, was liver and kidney checked in 2013 all fine.

My friend however has kidney disease, he drank anything and like a fish I mean real drinking.

All he can drink now is bitter and mild, which I find kind of ironic. :D

Well, perhaps looking at your friend has given you a warped perspective on acceptable alcohol consumption? The rate in which you are drinking is defiantly unsustainable man.

You cant seriously think you can keep this up another decade without, at best, ending up like your friend surely?

Anyway, I said I would say no more and have failed lol.

units and ratings differ all over the world like many things it is just moderation.

for eg the old ruling in uk was 28 units for men which is a bottle of whisky per week.

new ruling is basically half of that.yet in many countries its more than our old unit limit.take everything with pinch of salt.no one has a definitive answer but if its effecting you in anyway its obviously more than you shoould be drinking.

also depends on the person .

some people can drink a lot be fine for all their lifes have no issues some can drink smallish amounts and have issues.

there is no real line or true recommendation just a moderation.

UPDATE:

Since this thread I have managed to give up drinking in the week completely. I wouldn’t say it was hard, just felt a bit bored on times and nothing to look forward to.

However I still have about half a bottle of rum on a Saturday night…. Aside from the obvious health risks I feel all its costing me is a few quid. Plus its nice for the wife and I, once the kids go to bed to have some us time. She has one or two glasses of wine and I have a few rums watching a series, I then stay up after she’s gone to bed and watch my series (no comment). Which is basically my weekly allowance consumed in a night. Super binge drinking. That said, I have also started consuming a lot more water which has made a huge difference to my life.

Either way, I think posting this thread has in some ways helped my situation and made a little improvement toward my health!

I would bet the results would be different now, if you do actually drink that much every night.

It's not about higher grounds, that's the chip on your shoulder telling you that. It's about pointing out false statements because other more impressionable people might actually believe what you say & think it's fine to drink like that all the time. This is all assuming you're not piping up pure BS.

The way you talk about it I thought you'd been drinking like that for many years and had multiple checks that came back ok.

7 years and one check up 4 years in is a little different.

Half a bottle of rum is around 14 units. That's practically a bottle of wine which is absolutely nothing IMHO. Especially twice a week. Surprised people think it's a lot. As long as it doesn't effect your ability to work or function then I don't see what the big deal is.

My tolerance is very high and I wouldn't notice half a bottle of vodka either really.

Doesn't feel like a big deal.

You're clearly concerned otherwise you wouldn't have made the thread. Why not try splitting a whole bottle into four smaller bottles? You then know you are restricted to that amount for the night.

Maybe make it more than drinking because a show is on. Try different spirits and try to enjoy it. Otherwise there is no point in drinking alcohol for the sake of it.

Just because you don't feel the effects, doesn't mean it isn't bad for your liver. Fine, what you drink isn't seen as overly excessive for some people but I thought the idea of drinking was to enjoy it rather than out of habit?

I wish I could drink more.

I'm pathetic with alcohol, i only have to look at it and I get drunk. Fortunately I've got better since being with my partner as she likes to drink wine (yuck) but whenever we go down to Cornwall to spend time with her parents I end up drinking with her dad and in his eyes, real men drink.

I can handle upto about 3 or 4 pints of a good Cider now. After that though, I'm anybodies

Alcohol consumption is down to time it takes for you to drink.

I drink loads as I have said but my first 3 cans is over a period of about 3 hours.

1.8 units x 3 = 5.4 units

The body processes roughly 1 unit an hour, so if I drink 3 cans over 3 hours I only have 2.4 units of alcohol in me.

Now if I drank 3 cans in an hour which is hard with Guinness then I would have nearly twice the amount of alcohol in my system at 4.4 units.

Time is the key with drink, drink too fast you will be mashed and dead pretty quick if you do it all the time.

If you sip a nice whiskey and it takes you an hour, then nearly half of the units are cancelled out.

For example say I have 10 pints over the course of 7 hours.........

10*2.2=22 units but as it has taken 7 hours to consume 10 pints then I only have 15 units inside my body.

I sleep a minimum 8 hours a day so there is another 8 units taken away, so am left with 7 when I awake. Although I am a little different as I have a very high metabolic rate.
When I was tested at the clinic after a serious bender with the lads I had about 14 pints, I came out at just under the limit for driving on only 6 hours sleep.

As I don't drink in the day normally and only usually drink around 5-6pm by that time my body is totally alcohol free.

Each to there own some people can and some cannot, I do not promote alcohol abuse as my cousin is doing it now. (just remembered go to ring my mother see you in about an hour)
Serious chats going around the family at the moment over her.

Point is if you worried you doing a bottle of whatever a week then stop.
