Advice on consumer rights for a damaged oven after cleaning service

I suppose it is a different generation thing.

I simply cannot think of any job that I was able to do for myself that I ever thought of getting somebody else to do for me.

It is simply something that would not occur to me.

The things that I might need to do for myself, I just do because it needs to be done.

That's a commendable attitude but again, some people barely have any spare time due to work/family/whatever and would rather spend that time on something else other than cleaning their oven.

Easy. Get sodium hydroxide gel to smear all over the inside. Then some pellets to put in a bath with the trays etc. Job's a goodun.

I wonder what proportion of customers only get charged the £50 minimum (for a single oven).

it's actually most. the biggest percentage of ovens we clean is single ovens.

you missed a few steps off your list, but i do some what agree with your point. If you're after a quick touch up of an oven and not too fussed about getting the professional standard than there are options out there for you.

Word of advice to those considering putting the metal racks in the bath tub. this can very easily scratch your bath.

I don't mean charging more for bigger jobs, I mean is that a base price for a single oven with it being more expensive the dirtier it is? I meant a bath, not a bath tub - eg. we used a big bin and a big plastic storage box, last time. We got it very clean - it wasn't just a touch up, it was as clean as you're going to get, imo.

Ah I see. My mistake. We charge a tiny amount more if very dirty, you're talking £2 more. Most in the area start from £39 and stop around £55 for a single.

Don't forget the inside of the door too!

A letter before action is required first - There are loads of good templates online. WHICH have a good one if I recall correctly.

I love a good LBA. Written many - They usually get the result you need.

Good luck!

I dunno, some people are pressed for time. I don't seem to use my oven any more or the rest of the kitchen but if the washing machine broke these days I'd probably not spend half a Saturday taking it apart as I need that time and someone else who is an expert at fixing them can do it all much quicker than me for a modest fee that cost much less than the time I'd have lost.

Don't understand how ovens get into such a state in the first place when you have oven cleaner. £50 could buy you two meals at a restaurant, seems mad to spend it on oven cleaning, especially when situations like this happen, must have taken up hours of your time sorting it out.

If we're going with the argument of "why pay people to do things you could do cheaper yourself?" then:
£50 could buy you a lot of games on steam, seems mad to spend it at a restaurant when you could just cook for yourself at home..

I dunno through work I've learned there is a huge differnce in quality between "i can do this" and "this guy has been doing this every day for 8 years" sure i can get it to the required standard but it takes longer and the final finish is nothing like as good.

.thats problem with one off jobs you do yourself you'll never quite match the finish of a giy that does it day in and out

OTOH, One might end up doing a rather better job because one might be prepared to put in more time and patience rather than being in a rush with the clock ticking to get to the next appointment on the list or to keep the time down to what was initially quoted for (which is kind of what this thread is about isnt it? :p )

Yeah its settings and round abouts but when it comes to sigd like sealing or plastering they'll do it faster neater and with less waste.

Why spend money on Steam, when you can code the game yourself? :D

for £49.50.

you go to work, come home and find your oven looking brand new. most only get them done once a year and the results are fantastic. it's a joy to use a brand new looking oven that someone else cleaned for you.

Looks like a Miele oven !! if so it should be easy to wipe clean if you do it regular and dont leave it a mess.

A good point. In fact why bother with money at all; just do everything yourself

Of course, if you do do everything yourself, it is amazing just how little money you need to live really quite comfortably.

Part time working, no rush hour travelling.

Bliss! :p

(There are downsides and it certainly wouldn't suit everybody's circumstances, but I am happy. To me it just seems bonkers to work your balls off so you can afford to pay other people to do all the things for you that you cant do for yourself because you are too busy working your balls off to have the time to do for yourself :D)

Recorded delivery LBA (letter before action) - set out what you want done, payment for the door/fitting, citing the engineers report etc as evidence.

Give them 14 days to pay. Explain politely that should nothing be done in the 14 days you will have no option but to take legal action against them.

If nothing, small claims court - I suspect they will pay up before you get to this stage.

Conversely, if you earn enough that you don't need to work stupid hours, it seems bonkers to waste your free time doing mundane chores when you could pay someone else to do them giving you more time do things you actually want to do!

Not really because a restaurant meal is a completely different experience to cooking a meal at home, when you clean an oven you get the same results whoever does it.
