I'm having an MRI scan on Monday and was just wondering what to expect. Anyone been for one? How long does it take to get the results?

It's literally just laying in a tube for half hour or so. Not too bad if you're having your head scanned, but below that, they push you all the way in and it is a bit like laying in a coffin. You will have a way of informing the staff if it gets too much and they'll pull you out. Other than that, lay there, close your eyes and ignore the loud bangs that occur throughout. They will normally speak to you during it via intercom system, so you know how long is left.

Are these not the kind of questions you should have been asking your doctor?

My Doctor didn't refer me, he knows nothing about it.

Around 30 minutes on average, if you're claustrophobic you may not enjoy it.

I'm not claustrophobic. 30 minutes then, ok, thanks. Is that 30 minutes for the scan or 30 minutes till the results come in?

I've had several MRI scans. They are no big deal. You lay on a shelf that retracts in to a narrow tube, there are about 15cm of space around you. You have headphones in with music and they say "breathe in and hold" etc. Machine makes a banging sound. Might take a few days to here results, depends on the specialist.

I'm not claustrophobic but when I had one on my head I nearly hit the panic button. The scan was around 17 mins and my face was so close to the circular bit you go into I started to panic. I managed to calm down, close my eyes and breathe deeply. That sorted me out.

Who did refer you, as usually that person will receive the results and contact you later, rather than an as you wait results service?

My psychiatrist referred me. I understand that he will get the results but I was wondering if I would be told on the day by the MRI staff.

The pics they take are cool. They used Mri to build up a 3D model of my heart. That was wierd to look at, but it was very detailed.

I've had several, the last one being about 40 mins with contrast dye.

It's like being at a really crap techno rave with all the odd sounds. :p

I find it relaxing in a weird sort of way... just closed my eyes and chilled out.

I don't think MRI staff are quite qualified to make any medical assessments, they are basically there to "take a picture". Unless that is there is a tumour the size of golf ball in there, then they may notice ;)

I have had a couple before.

As others have mentioned it's a tight fit so claustrophobia might kick in.Oh yeah and it makes sounds like a spectrum loading and a 56k modem connecting on dialup.

No, not usually.
A psychiatrist is usually a doctor, so a doctor did refer you.
It would be uncommon to get any results on the day, a report will be sent back to the referrer, and they will speak to you regarding it.
Usually.

No. My Doctor is my GP which is what you meant when you asked me. My GP has nothing to do with the patient care my psychiatrist provides.

Sounds like a trip down memory lane lol. I loved my ZX Spectrum. :p

I didn't ask you.
Someone else referenced speaking with your doctor.
I asked who referred you.
It would also be strange if your doctor does not know about this, the psychiatrist will likely have sent the a letter related to the referral for MRI, so keep your GP in the loop.
If not, they will do after the results.

I'm not going to argue with you. I've told you the facts as they are right now.
