Bad time of year to sell? or is the used hot hatch market dead?

Indeed it makes absolutely no difference if you're selling it anyway, it'll have a full 12 month ticket and that's all the buyer cares about. If you wait until a month before it expires then it'll have 13 months but that'll make no difference compared to having 2 months.

It won't 'fly' through the MOT. The only thing that will be flying is the OP to the cashpoint to pay for the inevitable repair bill and he knows it :D

I'm not sure you guys are getting what the OP is thinking here realistically by not putting an MOT on it.

Sure, it will be better for prospective buyers just now. But as is obvious, now is not the time to sell. So leaving it until next year and doing it, when the market picks up, the new buyer will have a full 12 months MOT rather than 10 months or less by that time.

I'm part of a Mazda MPS group on facebook, folks have been moaning on there for 4/5 months that it's near impossible to sell their cars on without dropping to ridiculously low prices.

I only mention it as there is a lot of similarity between the 3 MPS and ST.
Yes I think the whole used hot hatch market now has a very limited market compared to say 5 years ago and it's therefore getting harder to sell them. I know I hardly see many on the roads.
Buyers mainly aim for the cheap lease deals on them now as they don't have to worry about expensive things breaking on them.

Thank you I'm glad someone gets my theory. :D
As i say it looks like I might aswell give up now as it's an awful time to sell and by the time mid January comes around it will have lost 2 months MOT already for nothing and re advertising as 10 rather than a full 12 months doesnt look as good.
Been looking over the last few days and seems everyone is dropping prices at the minute so I'm not the only one having trouble selling.

Sure, but if the market is bigger in 2 months anyway, why bother wasting money getting it done just now?

I know I'd rather my MOT due in January than November / December, as I am currently busy with many other things this time of year.

Have you noticed quite a dip in value's of the ST lately? they held there value really well for a couple of years but over the last 6 months they have finally dropped below the 5k mark for decent 2006/7 models.

Definitely, I saw one guy the other day selling it for below CAP/Glasses trade-in value  He didn't seem to grasp that he would actually make more money trading it in than he was asking for. That and he said it was standard, apart from the fact it had loads of cosmetic changes, a decat, cat back, quickshift and painted wheels

People aren't willing to wait to shift them anymore, they just want them gone so they're taking the hit which is of course driving the market down considerably.

I would say January is even worse than December as people in general are broke after spending everything at Christmas.

Only if you are terrible at budgeting, in which case, a thirsty hot-hatch probably isn't for you.

It's actually a little counter-intuitive on that side. Jan and Feb are some of the best months to be selling used cars.

As said above.

Plus, the OP has stated he still has 2.5 months until MOT is due, which would be closer to Feb, meaning he could have 13 months on it come January.

Except if he keeps it advertised, anyone who's been looking for a while will know it as the one which hasn't got much MOT left and not click back on it :p

Maybe, if you're not specifically looking for a particular example. I know for sure whenever I was searching for a specific car, I would keep an eye on anything that caught my eye. MOT length wouldn't necessarily stop me from considering a car, although it might actually stop me from buying. But if I still saw it advertised a couple months later, I probably would re-check the ad if the only thing wrong with it was MOT length.

The new one is only valid for 12 months from date of test. It doesn't wait for the old one to expire before starting....

You keep the original anniversary date so you do get 13 months if you time it right.

This. You know how MOT's work don't you? So long as you do it within a month of the old one expiring, you do get to keep the old date, so you can get a 13 month MOT.

@ divine wind - It's obviously not selling due to a mixture of being a bad time of year and the short MOT which i will amend.
There is no way I'm taking 3.2k trade in when the traders will then sell it for 5k when I've seen shed loads sell private for 4.5k with far more miles on than mine.
It's insured for 5 more months and it's up to the new buyer to tax it so they are none issues.

How tidy is it? If it's as in excellent condition, the miles aint too bad are they, I reckon Mark @ Rev It Up would offer you perhaps even more than £4500. Tell him what you have and let him make an offer.

ask for input then brush it aside then :p
Why woudl you leave it insured if you have a new car?
You've seen plenty LISTED for 4.5K, wonder how many actually sold for that ;)

Part of that will be people asking silly money for Mk2's and Mk2 money for Mk1's.

It might do :p I was all prepared to get a full new brake setup for my Mazda 6, it was in Mazda for some suspension work last week, they said there was nowt wrong with the brakes haha. Saves me a few hundred quid :D

As bad as it sounds have you checked the likes of wbcfm and wbac?
from the general feedback I've seen if the car is exactly how you described to them you will get the money they offer you.

Up In newcastle the local companies operating similar to WBAC seem to be fallign over themselves to pay more than any other local company lol

If you have the time and patience then just wait it out :)

All of them they went on bidding on eBay! So the fact people are happy to bid on them from 4.5k-5k without even looking at them first and the fact most had between 10-20k more miles on than mine proves I should easily get 4.5k ish even with the 2.5 month MOT.

ah if it's bidding fair enough, classifieds are a completely different ball game.

Just depends wether you cba and have the space/time to hold onto it then
