Arrival (2016).

Saw it again tonight. Oh man, just so good. Film of the year for me so far I think. Lots to think about and just so well done.

Taking the lady friend to see it tonight. Will be my third time! Took my parents last week as they're tight fisted as hell. They really enjoyed it, despite not quite understanding the ending.

I can see why a few haven't really taken to it. It's a bit of a house of cards if you scrutinise it too heavily (though nowhere near as bad as something like Interstellar) and the ending is just a tad too rushed imo. But it's still one of the best films of the year.

I should be seeing it tomorrow with my wife :) usually she wont see a movie like this but we going to a restaurant she likes beforehand. Cant wait... big fan of cool sci fi movies on the big screen. Interstellar promethius oblivion all are better on a big screen.

My wife and I went to see this today, and wow, just wow... film of the year for me. I (well, we) found it deeply moving to the point of being emotionally draining [yes, I wept]... Few films change your state of mind, but this did, and after leaving the cinema and walking around Exeter, with its bustle and noise, I found it hard to deal with... I didn't want anything to break the spell it had put me in and wanted to retreat to somewhere quiet.

No film is perfect however and there were moments that didn't work so well, but they were not enough to take away from the overall sensation this film created.

I really enjoyed it, a real think piece and when the reveal came in the 3rd act i am like "whoa, that's deep!"

There are plot holes, like all movies of this genre but i thoroughly enjoyed it.

Not much to add that hasn't already been said except the movie broke me at the end when she says...

"I forgot how good this feels" when hugging Renner.

Also as my wife and I are expecting our first baby, a lot of the closing scenes were hitting hard.

I'd say it's a 9 out of 10, he's an exceptional director, Sicario was my favourite movie of last year, this is in my favourites of this year. Can't wait for Bladerunner.

Agreed. I saw Arrival last night. Terrible seats (front row) due to my friend wanting to use his cineworld card at the Picture house and not being able to book.

Although I liked the film, I can't say I was particularly moved by it though. Maybe I am dead inside :p It was excellent though.

Jesus I must be dead inside I thought it was very cliché... I cry at rogue one trailers instead.

Just got back from seeing this. Thought it was really good. Had to force myself not to start shedding some MANLY tears at the end. It had some strong hints of Interstellar and just like that movie, this one is really powerful if you are a parent.

very good, despite hearing spoilers the other week :(

do you recon we will get a sequal, i would love it if we did, cant see it happening.

I want to know what their issue in 3000 years is, and what the writers vision of humanit with this knowledge is

or probably even better series of books rather than a film.

Promising start but overall a cringe worthy film.

The premise is laughable, more akin to magical fiction than science fiction. Language does have some influence in how we think but it can not change the perception of time because that evolved millions of years before language did.

The aliens were giant squids that spit ink? Really? Almost as imaginative as Greys. Worst of all, despite controlling mavity and mastering space travel, they are clueless dimwits (typical for aliens in Hollywood films). If your perception of time is non linear than you already understand some English (you learned it in the future) so how about using that stupid ink to write a few words and thus render the entire plot useless?

Dead/dying child. Where have I seen this before.. ? Oh yes, mavity? Interstellar? Boringggg.
The cinematography was good but if you are into the stories/ideas you won't get much out of it. It's basically a drama masquerading as sci fi because it would otherwise not have the blockbuster status and sales.

Completely disagree.

There is a woman? Where have I seen that before?

Every movie with a woman!

The heart breaking aspect isn't about a dying child and the child in interstellar never died of cancer! What movie did you watch in Interstellar? She lived to like 90! A full life and a fullfiling one. The point of the child here is Amy Adam's character would go through all that heart break again knowing it will happen for all the joy it it brings before it. Better to have loved than not loved at all.

Anyway, if you can suspend your disbelief that there is alien landed on earth then you can suspend disbelief that learning their language allows one you understand time in a different perspective. The only problem I would have is if they set up the rules and then they break it themselves but as with all time travel movie there is always a plot hole.

Movie doesn't need to be pigeonhole into this or that category, this is what it is.

interesting film. I think i will need to watch it again but 7.5/10 atm. Good but not Interstellar good.

I could be wrong (which is why i need to watch again with my "opened" eyes) but you remember that film by Nolan called Memento where the film is played sorta backwards through the eyes of the protagonist? Still linear but in reverse order. Whereas this film tries to flow in non-linear time order? Yes/No? Is that correct? If YES then i'll up my rating of it. I havent unravelled the varies threads to check.

The twist i thought wasn't that great (she has this ability to look into the future via dreams...unsure whether the Aliens activated this in her (and only her? Or if she always had it. Other people learnt the non-linear time language as well and they didn't develop the ability to look through time.) Anyway though they could have done timey-wimey stuff better (admittedly it is hard to do timey-wimey stuff and not look crap but hey GOT half managed it.)

Just a fair bit of holes in this un. I feel Interstellar built the majesty of the mystery far better. The concept of the time and language in Arrival film was good but does it make a great story though? Isnt this a problem Inception suffered a little from as well?

NB. I may change my mind upon further viewings

The narrative takes place in a linear order. She gains the ability to see into the future as a DIRECT RESULT of interpreting the Heptapods language. The dream sequences are assumedly just the language seeping into her subconscious before permeating her thoughts whilst she's awake as the film enters the third act and she starts to better understand there language.

I'll perhaps concede that Interstellar might have a better set up, but it wastes it all on a farfetched and overly sentimental ending. Arrival's ending, whilst sentimental is distinctly more profound because it doesn't push too hard against the logical boundaries of science. (Yes, I understand that Nolan consulted Kip Thorne on much of Interstellars plot, but even he stated the films ending plays around too much with the fundamentals of basic physics in order to tell it's story.)

Watched Arrival twice over the weekend. Cried on both occasions. Very good film but personally, I much prefer Interstellar (hokey ending accepted).

Anything with losing kids or kids losing parents and I'm gone. (I can't watch the last 20 mins of AI without blubbing)

Why is it only her that has this time "travelling" ability after learning the aliens language when plenty of other people learnt the aliens non linear time language? She had innate dormant psychic abilities already?

Not quite. I think you're not only meant to make the assumption that she's THE specialist in her particular area of studies, but that the other sites communicated in slightly different ways eg. the Chinese with that board game (the name of which slips my mind). Though they where sharing information, they appeared to be using different ways too communicate seeing as no specific technique seemed to be getting anywhere.
