MRI Scan

I've had a few and also nearly fell asleep on all of them. They talk you through it before and during, once even asked me what radio station I wanted to listen to (through non-metal headphones). I'm not claustrophobic at all, but the part where I would have felt it was at the beginning when I/it started to move in, after that I just shut my eyes and relaxed, after that the time flew by.

I actually found the headphones made me feel claustrophobic more than anything else so got earplugs instead the last few times.

I'm in double figures for MRIs and it's nothing to be worried about. I find it a nice rest in my busy days assuming they don't force you to listen to awful music!

Don't forget to ask for a CD/DVD of the images. The NHS may charge £10 - 20 for this, private is usually free. Very handy if you move around the country and/or have a long term condition as the UK medical services (NHS and private) have no central database.

I'd be most worried about having an allergic reaction to the contrast dye or being reminded of how little I weigh on the scales at reception.

It was my understanding that they test your liver function with a blood test beforehand to make sure your system can process the contrast material and that allergic reactions are very uncommon.

If you do have an adverse reaction, you're in the best place to get fixed! :D

Radiologists normally come in at the weekend and do a batch all at one time unless it is an emergency and they need the reports there & then.

One thing I came away with from my multiple tests (Ultrasound/MRI) was that I wish I'd chosen Radiographer as a career path. What a fascinating job!

Had three one on my neck and spine was OK, head first took just under and hour.
One of my kidney with contrast took 40 minutes fell asleep.
One of my knee, it was clamped down it was fractured, with suspected ligament damage, was painful. They stopped it after 20 minutes and redid it the next day under anaesthetic so was spark.

Had one on my shoulder. i nearly fell asleep - found the whirring quite hypnotic. Now, the fluid they had to inject into my joint beforehand... now that was not fun. That hurt more than the dislocations.

I had a shoulder one last year and nearly pressed the button to be brought out because the headphones I was given were playing the Killers album and I hate the Killers. It was genuinely worse than being slid into the tube which is OK if you know in advance it's pretty close and weird that you can't see out the bottom.
