Hi all, just wondering if anybody here has been to NYC. Would like to take OH for a few days, but wouldve appreciated advice on where to stay, how much spending money to take over a 5 day trip, things to do etc. I'd love to see Times Square.

Thanks,

Plenty of these threads.

You'll be bored with times square within 20 minutes, go once during the day and once at night. I stayed in SOHO, but it was rather expensive.

thanks for that, ill search and see what others have said.

Wouldnt mind going when it snows to be honest, looks amazing when its been snowing.

I'm here just now. Time square is nothing exciting really.

So far I've been down the highline. Visited the world one trade centre. Been to the top of the rock. And to grand central statiin. Today I'm up in a chopper and going to the basketball tonight. Doing the Guggenheim museum and central park tomorrow. Thursday is Macys thanksgiving parade. Friday is left open at the moment for any shopping.

I felt odd when I went to the one world trade centre and was put off by the amount of 'selfies' being taken  #9/11 selfie etc

Take a boat trip around Manhattan. Central park is a nice escape, should be the ice-rink at this time of year. China town is very cool and recommended for lunch. Take a day trip to the Catskills mountains or somewhere in mid-state NY, beautiful scenery. Catz deli is awesome.

Yep, I also hated that. It's not what the place should be for. It's pretty disturbing really, well as expected, but the selfie nonsense makes it just surreal.

Take a reasonable amount of money/card - mostly everything is payable by card. Expect to tip 15/20% in resturants.

enjoy.....love the city - been 10/12 times over last 15 years.

Also run a forum search in La Cuisine for recommendations on where to eat. There are some very very good write ups in there from people who have been with some top recommendations on where to eat. If you are a foodie there are some incredible places to visit.

dont forget little italy, greenwich.
get around on foot and just do the lot.

leos bagels is a must.
plenty of threads on here.

New York is a great destination for the sights, been a few times and stay in Manhatten. Generally be prepared for a lot of walking, and I mean a lot. Check out what's going on at Maddison Square gardens you may catch a gig, ice hockey game etc. Then there is The Grand Central Station and the 911 memorial and tour, well worth it.

Other things - Christmas market at Bryant Park, Ice rink at Trump (Boo hiss) tower, Top of the Rock Tour (Do the day and night tour), walking tours, wall street, 5th avenue, Maceys.

We went to a great restaurant called the View on the top of the Marriot which is a revolving restaurant, get to see a panoramic NYC from your table.. Plus the food was great although not cheap.

Few night Clubs etc in the area but bring ID.. Even if you are 40+ they still ask..

Central Park will be a nice shade of brown, bit boring tbh. Much prefer to see in the summer. But if it snows all bets are off.

Natural History Museum is a day of its own, it is enormous!

I stayed in very close to times square last time and while it was fun it was expensive and very noisy. After I realised I can stay out of the city centre for somewhere much much cheaper and quieter than spend just over a dollar on the subway getting into town, I'd do that if I were to go again.

But things to do:

- Top of the rock
- Natural History Museum
- Central Park
- $1 Pizza!
- Grand Central Station
- The Library
- Statue Of Liberty
- Macys
- Shopping

Lots to do, lots of walking, different food to try etc...its expensive but a great city. 5 days is plenty!

I personally don't get the appeal after being there, it was OK but there's much better cities.

It's expensive, finding places to drink is a chore, food is OK (unless your willing to spend a fortune). There really isn't a lot to do either.

I wouldn't ever be in a rush to go back.

If you fancy getting out the city get a train to terry town (sp) sleepy hollow nice places to walk around and only about 45mins on the train from grand central
