Reddit CEO Spez Editing User Comments

What's the difference to mods being able to edit posts on here?

The difference is that collectively our moderation is bound by the same set of rules, and no one person dictates that.
Whilst edits could be made, a reason for editing is left for transparency, and to allow an audit trail for other moderators.

So really there is no difference in the technicalities of it, that all hinges on everyone playing the same game but if one of the admins rather than mods decided to edit posts and not leave a reason they could do as they wished.

The internet is there for all to see though. If an admin edits a post, he is heavily outnumbered by users who can cry 'Edit!'. The more controversial the edit/change, the more the users will notice. On a site like that, it is so obvious there has been an edit, that the fact people cant see which user/admin edited the comment makes little difference.

Luckily none of the admins here have become unhinged and are on a wild editing powertrip (yet) :D.

I'm not too fussed to be honest and I use reddit. I just stick to my main interest subreddits r/rugbyunion, R/simracing, R/aww and it's fine. There are some places that are vile there though and most of the time they do let people get away with it.

Did reddit ever have any credibility? Shadowbanning and illegal content are rife on that site.

It's not really better than any of the other websites of that type. I think most know this however some think it's this bastion of fairness and common sense on the internet when it clearly isn't.

I think its more that the people that are in uproar feel that those sites are outlets for what they call 'free speech' and 'open communication' and that the dodgy stuff reflects that somewhat. They feel that ANY censorship or censorship which is not shown on the post is an invasion of this right.

Reality is though, having the freedom to say what you want does not mean that you have the freedom to be heard by whomever you want however you want and on whatever platform you want.

I still follow some sub-reddits for games but for me they lost credibility when they dragged their heels over shutting down the underage sub-reddits. This editing nonsense is nowhere near as bad as that.

For pretty much any website or system anywhere those with admin or database access can edit any user-generated content how they wish...technically.

On here Dons can edit posts without leaving a reason too if they so wish. If someone started doing that for any reason other than lulz it would be taken further though :p

Today Spez the CEO of Reddit made a post to say that he was editing people comments. Media outlets all over are picking the story up now.

BBC News

Business Insider

The comment itself

This is wrong on so many levels it's insane. Needless to say, the trust and credibility of Reddit and it's admin has been destroyed by one man.

On top of that, here is a private chat with Reddit Staff and Spez talking about it. These people are running a business but the chat looks like something from 4chan. They even got a Nazi Emote. I don't expect that type of behaviour in a business.

Some guy in the UK got arrested for something "he" said on Reddit a while ago, clearly in the future anything else leading to someones arrest and charge resulting from Reddit post and any other Media shouldn't be used if we have people like this editing peoples comments at whim.

It's been happening for years which rock have you been hiding under?

 :D

reddit is a load of horse crap. it's just like the rest of the social garbage with people posting tripe about being in Costa having a coffee and sitting on the bog curling one out while kneading their balls to pictures of Theresa May in a just above the knee cut skirt..................
