Hello

My girlfriend and I have just ended our tenancy for a furnished flat as I am moving to somewhere with a bit more space and is unfurnished meaning that we have been able to take our own furniture out of storage.

One of the stipulations on my rental contract was that I have to have the flat professionally cleaned when I move out.

The letting agent recommended a local company, who I commissioned to do the cleaning which was completed on Tuesday. The company stipulated that all of my posessions and goods should be moved out prior to the cleaning taking place.

I successfully removed all posessions from the flat, though stupidly had left some expensive model railway items (mint in box - value >£200) in one of the drawers and only realised that this was missing yesterday evening.

I spoke to my landlord who visited the property and confirmed that the item was no longer there.

I then spoke to the cleaning firm who said that they hadn't seen it, though the their employee may have mistaken it for rubbish and thrown it away. I asked if they could confirm whether this was the case, as if so, I would search through the bins store at the property to retrieve it!

Around 30 minutes later I got a phone call saying that their employee had it in their posession and that I could go around to their house and collect it from them.

While I am glad to have the item back,I feel aggreived for several reasons

1) I was handed the item back in a carrier bag, still in it's box. The box has been ripped open and damaged, and the instruction manuals scrunched up. Thankfully the model it's self is still in good condition, though the damaged packaging will reduce it's value

2) Why, when employed by me to act in my interests did they not contact me to advise that they'd found something which was clearly of high value, or at the very least hand it in to the concierge at the block of flats

To add insult to injury, despite charging over £200, they have not cleaned the flat to a sufficiently high standard, which has displeased my landlord.

Where do I stand with regard to this? I don't feel that I can let this go, though have no idea what do do.

They might not have known it was valuable. Still suspicious though. I'd be more annoyed that a company the letting agent recommended didn't clean the flat properly tbh :p

Broke the chain. Ban them!

If they haven't cleaned it well and damaged property I imagine you could look at recouping some money. I assume they have some kind of t&cs.

I think you're very lucky the employee admitted to having the item, especially if it was valuable...

Did they steam the carpets or upholstery?

No offence, but you must've been quite a sleeper to let this happen to you.

The 'professional cleaners' & 'professional inventory clerks' will both be in cahoots with the letting agent, which is why they likely stipulate both as necessary. Entire business is rotten.

Of course anyone can do either job to an acceptable standard.

OK, so if I understand correctly, the cleaners arrived at the already vacated by flat with orders to empty it, throw everything away and leave it sparking clean.

In process of cleaning they emptied the furniture of a toy you left behind by your own mistake. One of the cleaners kept it for safety rather than disposing of it into the trash (where it belonged by the terms of the contract).

They may now get fired, for what effectively was the only reason why you can have your valuable item back? Is that about correct?

Well, that will teach them to never report the truth to their boss when asked.

If the landlord isn't happy with the standard of cleaning then he shouldn't have requested it to be professionally cleaned. (professional cleaner does not always or hardly ever equal someone who is passionate about cleaning and will leave the place to a really high standard)

With regard to the train, I don't think you have much to complain about, or rather I don't think you'll get anywhere.

Cannot see a lot wrong with it to be honest.
You left something behind. They thought it was unwanted.
The owned up when asked about the item.

Good on them.
What was their cleaning like? Did they do a good job?

Sounds like the cleaners did their job, clean the flat and prepare it for the next tenant. It was stipulated as you said to move your junk out, anything you left was probably deemed left behind stuff you didn't want.
