Came into the work today to see this question doing the rounds and nobody seemed to be able to answer it, I didn't think it was that difficult but maybe I'm wrong.

I'm slightly concerned so many people in my firm didn't understand this question.

Well that would depend on where you work, if you work in a greasy spoon, I wouldn't be so surprised, if you work in a financial firm then I would find it concerning.

Well it's gone back and fourth between a few people from our accounts and IT department, one of the girls from accounts described it as impossible.

why dont they just write the question in simple english and not try to confuse people

I thought it asked for one number that rounds to 1000 and one to 100, question is exactly worded well.

I thought that too but as it asked not to do it for the nearest 10 I assumed they wanted 2 answers.

Surely given that it's asking for the nearest 1000 and 100 without 10, then as some have said, anything that doesn't end with a 0 is wrong, as that would round to 10.

So 47600 (closest 1000) Would round up after 47500, and 48040 (closest 100) would round down before 50? Alternatively so would 47960, and 48400.

Or have I become thick.

I read it that each number you choose must round to 48000 as the nearest 1000, 48000 as the nearest 100 but must not round to 48000 as the nearest 10.

I think you have that back to front

I'd bet greasy spoon workers are more financially savvy than financial workers

Yep, so your range for the less than 48000 part would be 47950 > 47994
