Bangkok in January

One of my work mates has invited me to his wedding in Bangkok at the end of next month. I will be attending on my own and will be in the city for around 6-7 nights. I am on a budget so dont fancy island hopping so think its best to stay in Bangkok for the whole holiday. Any advice on what places are a must visit and wheres the best place to stay ?

Ive never been on holiday on my own before, so feeling a bit scared and excited at the same time so any advice would be great !!!!!!
 
Thai bride internet hook ups can be tricky. My advice is to holiday in Cambodia and then Skype him on his wedding day saying you've been kidnapped by Tamil Tigers. When he askes what Tamil Tigers are doing in Cambodia, just hang up, dip your wick with a lady boy and then return home. Job done.
 
It's a massive city. I stayed in the Khaosan Road area and used a variety of buses, tuk tuks and taxis to get around, depending what time it was and where I was trying to get to. You'll be fine on your own.
 
We're there in February, we're staying in Chinatown for a week, Chatuchak weekend market is apparently a must and is definitely on our list. There's a ruined city about an hour north of Bangkok which is worth a visit too, I forgot it's name though, i believe it was once the capital, or the largest city or something. The grand palace is worth a look too. You should pay a visit to the rooftop bar that was on hangover 2 too. Some fantastic views from there.

A word of warning though, when you get in a taxi, you must insist they put the meter on, they will try it on with westerners and claim it's cheaper but it's not.
Also, be very careful if you want to hire a scooter too, they don't have insurance in BKK so any damage must be paid for.
 
Budget in Thailand? You realise how cheap it is right?

If you want to Island Hop, you can get a sleeper train down South, then fly back up.

You can fly north to Chiang mai, which is a lovely city - it's the old capital, still surrounded by old city walls.

Wat Po is worth a visit in Bangkok, big old temple with the 'reclining buddah'. If you go to the Grand Palace and anyone says its closed today, or close for maintenance , ITS A SCAM. its open every day other than 1 day, so they never shut the place.

There's a restaurant called Cabbages and Condoms - weird right? Its based upon a charity which states a cabbage should be as readily available as a condom... But the food and atmosphere is immense, it's in the right neck of the woods too, Soi 11 - 15 is full of bars.

As Wez mentions - tell the taxi drivers you don't want to go see any gem sellers - they'll try to drop you off and make you go into a shop.
 
Get online and start organising meetups with your uhh girlfriends now :) January is winter there so wont be too bad though that means high season so slightly higher prices for stuff.

Great food, great weather, lots of fit women, cheap living (compared to UK) what more do you want?
 
I miss Thailand. In my younger days I'd go there every couple of years. I've not been since 2000. Have fun :)
 
Have a look at Geoff Carter's channel on youtube too, he's from the North (Warrington), but spends a lot of time in Thailand. He's made a life out of youtube now.
 
Bangkok's cool and all but I wouldn't spend more than a weekend there...it's not exactly a beautiful city. Some nice temples and stuff around but mostly it's just another dirty smelly mega touristy SE Asian city.

Seems daft to go all the way there and not hop on a train down to the coast and islands. Especially when you're escaping a crappy wet and cold UK in January.
 
Lived in Bangkok for 2 months this summer, loved the city! But there is so much more to do. Go to an island or two. It's not expensive. This talk of a 6 quid 4 course meal is a joke though unless you go to the far North.

I went on my own before flying into Vietnam, for 3 nights. That on its own was probably too long.

I got done with the whole big budda thing, although I never got in one of the tuk tuks I thought the palace was shut then when I walked past it was just about to shut. So yeah that's a complete lie.

Khoa San road is pretty mental at night time, infact I'm not sure I want to talk about....

I'd try and up the budget and explore, Thailand is crazy cheap. Oh and eat loads of amazing food! I've still to discover Thailand though.

Oh and get on Tinder :D
 
River kwai is worth a visit maybe stop a night up that area. Personally I would say 3 days is enough in Bangkok so must spot it with another city or koh samui or phuk etc.

But what you really wsnt do is get down too Patts it's only 90 mins away, find your tirak take her koh samet, koh larn, koh chang islands think you are in love get told you are 'hansum' man all the time hand over a load of cash to her come home feel depressed then go keep going back patts twice a year.

People are the same when they talk about Eastern Europe - they remember going to Prague in 1996 and think it's still 80p a pint everywhere.

Beer - Not particularly cheap in Thailand. Expect to pay anywhere between 55 and 90THB for a big beer depending on where you drink.
Meals - I actually didn't have a single sit down meal in Bangkok! I lived off street food at between 30 and 100THB, again depending on what you eat and where you get it from
 
soo good that im thinking about moving there for a bit to work and explore. Didnt find Bangkok any more dirty than most UK cities to be honest. I didnt see any fights on the streets or groups of chavs on street corners (just the ladyboys :D)

Oh and if you are on a budget either take cash with you and change it there, or change it before you go. Every time you use a cashpoint in Thailand, no matter how small the transaction or what machine you use, you'll incur a 200THB charge which can add up really quickly.

50 baht is around £1.24 so thats very cheap. (happy hours prices). Most restaurants i paid between 100 - 200 baht for a meal including drinks. So £2 - £4.50 which is still miles cheaper than the UK.
