*** Nintendo Switch ***

Played through the new Pokemon game recently and the cutscenes are laughably bad and SOOO LONGGGGG HURRRRGHNNN.... they would really have to up their game if that's their big launch effort!

I'm very posotive, Nintendo have said the Switch isn't a replacement for their handheld gaming platforms.

They also said the Gameboy Advance wasn't a replacement for the Gameboy Colour and the DS wants a replacement for the Game Advance and look how that turned out.

That's why when Nintendo says something, I always keep in mind they have a history of changing their plans.

Of course it's a replacement for the 3DS! To be fair I think Nintendo said the switch wasn't a 'direct' replacement for the Wii U or the 3DS. Which is doublespeak for "it'll replace both of them" :)

The only disparity right now is the pricing where the switch will likely be around £200-250 whereas the 3DS is about half that price. Honestly though in a few years (3-4) time I'm be amazed if Nintendo don't kill off the DS line, refresh the Switch with a better battery/higher res screen/newer tegra chipset/ligher weight/VR support/etc and bring out a 'budget' Switch using what'll then be the older hardware (maybe the current model without the dock/etc) for around £100-150.

It makes no sense to keep 2 product lines when they both cater to the same market segment.

In which case Nintendo are competing with themselves and have hurt their own sales. Well done Nintendo.

Otherwise, the 2 posts above have the right idea. Any smart business would say that their new product isn't a replacement, if only to keep selling the old product as best they can till the new product is out.

Wanna know something funny? There has often been sales and deals on Nintendo hardware around November each year... except this year (only in the US and even then, very limited). The 3DS models retained full price this season. If the Switch had nothing to do with it, then we'd have gotten sales and deals as normal. Thusly they want to sell as much they can before the Switch comes out.

Edit:

New models of the 3DS XL with a charger and a game go for around £200 (or £180ish standalone). The non-XL versions are close behind. So there is a clash in terms of pricing. Only the 2DS bundles are sub-£100.

What else would Nintendo say? If they said Switch was replacing both the Wii U and 3DS then nobody would bother buying either, it's not like they have anything else to make money from.

They said the same thing with the DS and the 3DS IIRC.

Specs are the least important part of consoles for me. If I was concerned then I would have laughed when the PS4 was revealed an never purchased one.

Then again, I still play my SNES.

Does anyone expect this to be bleeding edge tech?

My PC does bleeding edge, my PS4/Xbone do the home console stuff and the Switch will be my gateway to all those Nintendo classics I've been missing out on for far too long.

Love the concept of this thing, I reckon I'll likely use it more than my PS4 if they get enough games on it.

It seems to be better than the Wii U which I am happy with. But to pretend I do not care about specs, that would be a lie. The rumour if true could mean it is not 16nm and it is not as powerful and efficient as hoped by the revealed info so far. This could mean less third party games, which although is not the reason I personally buy a Nintendo system, it can have negative consequences for the console. Generally speaking the more value people get for their money, the more happy they are I would think ;)

So yes I would be a little disappointed if it ends up not being 16nm and not being Pascal, but it would not stop me from buying and enjoying it :D

I'm the same. My PC is there for the highend stuff. My PS4 was there for Destiny (but since I've found out Destiny 2 will be on PC it has turned into a glorified phone charger) and the Switch will be for Nintendo games and portable gaming.

Super excited. Had one pre-ordered for a while now

Full trailer. Interesting to see how this will turn out. Got the book coming as a Christmas present, hopefully it's decent.

Yeah, but that doesn't matter, and neither does 3rd party support cause Nintendo release a great game every 3 years! Ah ..

Well arguably the specs don't. Mario Kart 8 is a fantastic looking game that runs at 60 fps, something a lot of developers struggle with on superior hardware.

I'm really disappointing if them specs turn out to be true. I was expecting a pascal based GPU which would have been so much faster then this. I think they would have been better served going with the tegra X2 even if it meant a 6 month delay, we would have had a much better product for it!

Would that not mean a price increase and thus another negative though? Seems any company is kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place with it. Personally I think a modular approach would work well with hardware.
