AMD Announces FreeSync 2

This is indeed interesting. Presumably this will be a feature VEGA shouts about, but I wonder when we'll actually see high end gaming monitors that support this? Monitor tech seems to move at such a snails pace, especially in the top end space where ultrawide and 4K reside.

Apparently all GCN GPU's that support Freesync will support Freesync 2, as they already have the hardware to output HDR signals.

So what does this mean for those of us with freesync now?

Presumaby if my old monitor had been freesync I would not of been able to change the resolution in game from the monitors max of 1080p up to 1440p as I often did and use freesync at the same time?

So basically it was a limitation that has been solved.
But as an ultrawide user now it means nothing, yes?

Is HDR what AMD call Virtual Super Resolution (VSR)?

VSR is what AMD call DSR

HDR is High Dynamic Range

Free-Sync is unchanged, new Free-Sync-2 Screens will also come with HDR.

From reading about this is only for HDR monitors Freesync itself remains the same only now it supports HDR.

So if you buy a HDR monitor with Freesync 2 it will support HDR also.

I have seen some funny people on twitter complaining there Freesync monitor is not out of date and asking can it be updated Wow! Use your brain man, if you want Freesync 2 you will need a new monitor supporting HDR.

HDR is a tricky one because no company can show its effect without sitting you in front of a display.
So how do you show someone what HDR can do? Lol
It's like when HD first came out and people was watching previews on SD TVs lol I have heard couple family at the time saying I don't see any difference haaa

Yup it is hard to show what exactly HDR will be like on a non HDR display but they could have done a far better comparison, even in linus's video about the OLED TV, he give a far more accurate representation of HDR VS SDR.

I have seen HDR and yes it is good (especially on OLED) but it is nothing like that comparison of theirs.

It reminds me of asus's comparison for qHD VS full HD

I wounder does Gsync support HDR? Has Nvidia said anything about this?

I guess HDR needs work around for these sync technologies too work hence AMDs Freesync 2

Not according to the original quote

So if it doesnt do what Freesync does and is very little to do with it why call it Freesync 2 ? People are going to buy into Freesync 2 thinking it improves there framerate like Freesync does and instead it will either improve their HDR experience or do sweet fanny craddock.

As others have said should be AMD HDR or something. So question is will new HDR monitors be labelled as having Freesync 1 and Freesync 2 ?

It's amazing isn't, That just looks like certain settings are turned down in one and normal/up in the other, I'm pretty sure my frames aren't looking like those on the left side all of a sudden.

This ones hilarious, No wonder I need to wear glasses now, I've been on full hd for years..

AMD seem to be leading the way on monitor HDR. They obviously see it as the next big thing and are jumping in with both feet

Hopefully it's more popular than 1% VR

But where are the Freesync HDR monitors at? The new Samsungs seem plagued with issues reading this thread... it's cause for concern at the very least. Any others on the horizon? It's useless tech if we don't have a quality product to actually do its job properly. I would like to see a 100hz+ ultrawide or 4K @ 40" monitor with Freesync HDR across a wide range. Too much to ask?

Yeah I think you're right... we hear about monitors WAYYY before they see the light of day, and I'm not even aware of any more other than Samsungs. CES may be revealing though.

In AMDs video on Freesync 2 they say this tech will only find its way into the premium monitors.

Yeah you're right, they're actually not HDR... for some reason I thought they were at first, but no. We've yet to see or hear much about any HDR monitors, although LG are apparently showing the 4K 32UD99 at CES, which supports the HDR10 standard. I don't think it has Freesync though. I get the feeling we'll be waiting a while for Freesync 2 to actually mean anything in a practical sense.

I read possibly first half of 2017 we'd see product, but I think that's hoping too much. Second half at earliest I'd say. The whole 'certification' thing sounds promising though. Unlike TV's, if they have an actual rigid standard that needs to be complied with, we won't simply see the Freesync 2 label slapped on anything that can't actually properly display HDR. The situation with TV's is just ridiculous... most don't even come close to achieving the required standard to display HDR, yet are labeled as such. It's blatant false advertising.
