What should you do if one of your tech support guys are working on a customer's PC who has a shortcut titled "Horny 14 yo girls" in Chrome? The adviser didn't open or inspect the short cut and my viewing software wont allow it either.

As far as I see it, there is no actual proof that the content of the link in what is says it is unless we inspect the link. Even then, I would not have thought such a site would be available through Chrome without using TOR or similar so it might be not what it appears to be.

We don't get through their files and only perform health checks and Malware scans. Unless the customer asks us to specifically check a folder, we don't unless it is part of the health check.

Tough one. I would say ignore it begrudgingly...

I just can't see a good outcome for you guys with no evidence.

Maybe delete the shortcut? He isn't going to report you for deleting the shortcut it if that is what it is. Might even spook him knowing you have seen it?

Edit. Can't you see what the shortcut is to? Is it a website or on his hard drive?

really? Personally its not up to the shop to find proof but I would report it to the police. let them check it out. If its nothing, no harm done.

If its what it says it is that's another pedo off the streets.

I'd right click it, see where the shortcut leads.

If it's a well known adult site I'd ignore it, they wouldn't allow it.

If it looks dodgy, contact local police station and ask for someone to come round and inspect it as you don't feel you can. It's then up to them to follow through with it.

inspect the link and see if it looks like a dodgy website from the web address (without actually visiting the site) if the web address looks dodgy then call the feds

No I completely agree. I did say it's a tough one... You're right.

Maybe I'm just overthinking the possibilities of repercussions if it isn't that.

But like you said its down to the police.

I'd report it without a doubt. If I didn't do anything and the guy went unnoticed and then sexually abused a young girl, I don't think I could live with myself.

You don't have protocols in place for something like already if you offer tech support?

Anyway I would not just 'begrudgingly' ignore it. Report it to the authorities and let them handle it. Even if it's just a 'joke' name for the folder, what person in their right mind would have a folder on their pc named that.

What bothers me about the idea of reporting to the police is that if it isn't child porn, but he does have some other illicit stuff on his PC, he could get similarly ruined. I'm talking anarchists cookbook, or some flavours of niche (consenting, adult) pron.

Obviously if you knew it to definitely be child porn then shopping him would be a no brainer.

Had a similar situation a number of years ago. Was copying files as a part of a backup job and noticed a bunch of file names (video files) were dodgy as hell (underage girls, ages in file names etc) ...obviously didn't open them up - never pried into people's data regardless. That and the fact that I'm not a pervert! Customer was not present - had left the PC with us.

Reported to management who in turn informed the police who came and took statements and took the PC away. Never really heard what the outcome was in detail or how the investigation went - last we knew, they claimed it was stuff downloaded by their kids off Kazaa and Limewire.
