Suspected Child Porn?

What bothers me about the idea of reporting to the police is that if it isn't child porn, but he does have some other illicit stuff on his PC, he could get similarly ruined. I'm talking anarchists cookbook, or some flavours of niche (consenting, adult) pron.

Obviously if you knew it to definitely be child porn then shopping him would be a no brainer.

Perhaps not such a bright idea to be handing over a PC containing illegal materials to another party then.

You don't have protocols in place for something like already if you offer tech support?

Anyway I would not just 'begrudgingly' ignore it. Report it to the authorities and let them handle it. Even if it's just a 'joke' name for the folder, what person in their right mind would have a folder on their pc named that.

Friend did it for a 'laugh'? I would report it to the police anyways, shouldn't just ignore things like these.

I don't think it's a tough one at all. Report it instantly. At the very least the customer will think twice about naming any innocent shortcut in that manner.

Call the police, give statement, forget about getting paid. I know because years ago this happened to me (the reporting bit, not being in possession :p)

I am tempted to call the customer back and say that my colleague forgot to do something, inspect the link to see if it's a HDD link or a website link. Then decide on the next course of action.

if its illegal, its illegal.

Realistically, if a PC is in for tech support these days then it's because it's unusable, therefore you've no chance of removing any dodgy content or "cleaning up" before handing over.

if its illegal, its illegal.

Oh come now. Have you seen the stuff the government is going to be cracking down on?

Spanking, female ejaculation, period sex..... I don't know if you'd be in trouble to it being on your PC, but it's already illegal to host it in the UK

Not sure someone should end up on the sex offenders register for those.

if someone is at home looking at child porn they are off the streets.

But how many of the poor kids get fiddled with to make porn? I'd look at it to see where it leads or just get the police in, even if it leads to nothing I'm sure they will be glad you've rang them, I probably wouldn't look at it in fear of the repercussions on me. If it leads to something dodgy then it needs to be dealt with, I feel bad for pedos but then they need to get help and stop hurting kids, even watching kiddy porn you are indirectly affecting the poor sods.

Do NOTHING* yourself if there is wrongdoing then that could distort evidence, etc. contact police non-emergency and they will have a process in place for dealing with it - even if it is a false alarm. I highly suspect in reality its someone's idea of a "funny" prank, etc. but that is another matter.

* Don't follow or inspect links - best thing would be to power down system and await advice from the police.

I find it odd that someone would leave something as obvious as a short cut with that sort of title on their PC and take it into somewhere to have it repaired or work done on it.

Either way I would right click, see where the link takes you and if anywhere potentially dodgy report it to the police.

It happens, people are stupid

Also happens where a partner has taken a system to be repaired either not knowing what was on it or because they know what is on it but don't want to do something directly themselves.

It has been found out this way before. And it will happen again. This could be one of those times OP so do something about it. :)

I had to remote into a consultants laptop and add some web links in to Chrome.

I opened his bookmarks bar to find hundreds of porn links...

He text me and said "good job you're not the wife!" and we laughed.

People forget what they've got on there machines, or they are unable to login to remove it before taking it to repair.

I would have a look at where the link goes. It could, just may be, be a mate mucking about and putting that on his PC but pointing to something innocent as a gag. Then police.

This is no "Funny Prank". I have spoken to the "customer" in the past and there is something off about him. Maybe it is his extreme low intelligence but he is constantly infecting his PC with malware. I am wondering what he is searching for and clicking on to get infected so often.
