Hot Hatchbacks..

I thought the A45 was a fantastic car to drive, but it feels like a rally car (due to the seats to a large degree), where as the Golf R just felt like a normal Golf that went very fast if required. The latter therefore being better as a more subtle and pleasant daily driver. The A45 is a pretty serious performance car, the brakes are among the best I've ever used too.

To a lesser extent that's the appeal of the Polo I leased. Through choice I wanted something cheap as I have been guilty of spec creep on these things in the past so set myself a budget of circa 150 a month to stop that. I would have been annoyed if I ended up buying something for 30K after said spec creep! I also wanted something that could be fun but most of the time was just a good little car that would look after me, be easy on me and could park anywhere.

The most amount of fun I've had in previous cars were my Puma and 172. Although your not call the puma hot, certainly by modern standards it was one of the cars you just give it full beans anywhere and you were never going that fast, it was just fun. The 172 was much the same but for some reason I never had quite as much fun in it.

The S2000 that came after it was rewarding but always had the chance of spitting you off the road if you pushed too hard or made a mistake. My current Focus ST is ok, but beyond 2nd or 3rd gear it can get too fast for some roads, and the power delivery of modern turbo cars is very point and squirt I find.

The Golf R is quite flashy unfortunately, the internet seems full of stories of people getting them nicked which is odd for a car thats hardly common :(

Common yeah but they are not too flashy though , well i cant spot where i parked mine here :D

Most fun I have had in any car was my Fiat Uno Turbo IE , that thing was so light [ like made of paper] and so responsive , it was a riot to drive around town. Traded it in for an Opel Kadett GSi

Both cars struggled on the road day to day with the lack of power and short gearbox. Overtaking people you had give it some! Great fun on the track or quiet roads.
Just saw this - how could they be slow on the road? 167bhp in a car the weight of a tin can!

Saw a GTI clubsport the other day which stood out to me more than an R. Quite a few R's around though compared to the Clubsports so maybe just that they are less common.

Yeah you wouldn't fit at all. The back seats are also pretty much useless thanks to the sport seats, but i absolutely love mine, massively addictive to drive. I've always had hatchbacks and this is by far the best I've ever had.

That not a hot hatch

That a toy car........:D:p

I wasn't looking for the best hot hatch I was looking for a cheap run about and having been in my fathers polo runabout I know how solid and quiet they are and how they feel like a much bigger car because of this. The Fiesta will be a better hot hatch but won't give that relaxed big car feel that the Polo surprisingly does. People go in it and are surprised how big and quiet it feels but then it also can be made to go really well too. Add in a cheapish deal and I just faxed an order in and it arrived on my drive.

I loved the interior in the Polo. It was basically a mini Golf. However, the engine in the 2011 Polo GTI I had drank oil. There was something wrong with it and VW refused to accept that using 18L+ a year of oil for 14,000 miles was wrong. The DSG box was the reason I went for the Golf after my gf's consistent moaning about the Fiesta's seats.

Handling though, I still say my Fiesta was much better sorry :( You'll still love the Polo though. I think they look great inside and out compared to Ford's plastic interior.

I'm waiting til the end of next year to see the new Fiesta ST before hopefully switching back.

You dont even need a hot hatch.
The 125bhp ecoboost fiesta is great fun to drive, its not a rocket ship, but for a shopping trolley its fantastic.

Mind you, any car can be hilarious to drive, I've had a mazda 6 2.2 diesel for the past two weeks, it absolutely hates corners, and really struggles to get its power down, so ive been wheel spinning everywhere.

Yea the "acceptable" oil usage on VAG engines is crazy, they must be using crap seals or something. They will allow up to 1L per 1000 miles! My Fiesta ST never lost a drop in a year of driving...

But I'm swapping it for a GT86 at the weekend, something slower and even more usable. I think it's going to snow, so getting it home on the eco tyres they stick on them should be interesting :P

Mine.

I normally turn stop start off because the car is either cold and I want it to carry on warming up at lights or its hot outside and the air con stops when the engine does.

The Civic won't engage the auto stop/start unless the engine is up to temp. Would have thought it was the same in them.

That's how they all work, the system won't engage until the engine temperature is correct and will keep the engine running of the heating or AC requirements are not met.

So turning it off to warm up the car doesn't do anything.

Thanks for clearing that up. It didn't sound right.

I think the current lot of small hot hatches hit the mark perfectly, enough power to avoid being mauled by the diesel repmobiles but not so much you end up at licence shredding speed in seconds. I've had my ST for 6 months and I'm happy with my choice, I still have a fully functioning back too, despite what people say about the suspension.

Mine must be faulty then or just crap.

Agree with this after a Millbrook event I did last year. All the instructors were really impressed with the Focus ST. Great all round car

Give it 40k miles of daily commutes on UK roads :D
