taking your shoes off when you go to someone's house.

Generally they don't ask, I do it automatically.

More often than not they'll say there is no need but it seems the right thing to do. :)

Why would you be offended?

Being raised in a (half) Chinese house, this was the norm for me and considered respectful.

It was only when I came to Ireland and automatically took my shoes off at my then gf's house did I realise it could be construed as being rude.

My house has an agnostic approach - as my wife thinks wearing shoes around the house is normal and I don't. We also have dogs and so all bets are off with regards to doing it for cleanliness or for looking after the floor.

Why would you feel offended? Would you walk on your own carpets at home with dirty shoes? If not, then there's no reason why you wouldn't take them off at someone else's house.

Regardless, it's the polite thing to do and I do it every time I'm visiting someone's house, unless the host is already wearing shoes indoors.

Depends. If it's a party no I'm taking shoes off. If the front door walks into a tiled area no I'm taking my shoes off. If it's wet and I'm walking into a carpeted front room yes I'm taking shoes off.

No mention of flip flops?

do u feel offended when you go to someone's home and they ask you to take your shoes off?

Nope. I normally ask anyway, but normally take them off without thinking - I don't like walking around a home with my shoes on.

I've always taken my shoes off in the house but that's how I was brought up (yes I'm a Johnny Foreigner :p).

And most people suggest to us when they come in "should I take my shoes off?" - to which we say, yes please.

If they don't ask we ask that they do. Our house, our rules. I don't want people wearing shoes in the house. That's it.

OP is strange. Would you not feel offended if someone came into your home and walked over your nice clean carpets with dirty shoes on?

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I think you are totally right THEIR with your statement.

When you do the whole "u" thing as an adult, you just can't criticise another's English.

Taking your shoes off is normal for myself and most people I know. I can't imagine why anyone would be funny about keeping their shoes on. Maybe except if their feet stink.

Dry day, then wipe them on the mat. Very wet or muddy then take them off at the door.

These are the unspoken rules I was brought up by and continue in my own home.
