New card this weekend! But which one?

I will agree with Apache. I set everything to high and good to go. If is a new game.
If not and I know my card can take it, I ramp everything up.

Also a lot change happens between DX12 and DX11, new drivers and game patches.

Here is a recent review with recent drivers (Oct/Nov) for most of the current new games.
(yes from the 1050Ti but includes all the lineup from both companies)

I must be doing something wrong, gaming in 1440p, maxing every game I play, no issue :)

Not PS2 at qHD,since it is more CPU limited especially during the large firefights, and I found one or two settings could push the card too much even in some less taxing situations. Some engines are just too old or just purely optimised.

Then good old Deus Ex:Mankind Divided, which on max settings is not an easy game to run.

I was touting the Black edition too at first but it's the XXX with a 1288 boost that was tested on the J2cents youtube channel so that's the one I've heard good things about.

There's probably no difference other than the name and the 30 or 40 odd mhz boost clock but I don't know for certain.

Ahh ok yeah the only difference that I know of between the two is the factory boost overclock, the cards and coolers are identical between the XXX and the "Black Edition".

So yeah either of the two would be a goo choice (Good looking cards, 3yr warranty, backplate) :D

That's news to me too! Playing Triple A titles maxed/ultra at 1080p with my OC'd 290.

You're not, unless your 290 is magical & outperforms 1080s as per 100s of reviews.

Again, you're also not maxing recent games without SLI/CF, and likely not even then. My evidence: the 100s of 1080 reviews with benchmarks of new games, but really I'll just point to the 2 examples I already gave.

Depends how you define "max". My 1080 can play everything at 1440p at max detail/texture settings and get 60+ fps, but occasionally I'd have to turn off some extreme settings, stuff like gameworks effects, physics effects, special lighting and shadow effects (contact hardening shadows?) and of course intensive forms of AA like SSAA.

It does depend on definition and parameters. For example, I wouldn't class things like PhysX & Gameworks as extreme but rather normal settings well intended by the developers to be used (e.g. Hairworks in The Witcher 3). The only extreme things I count (excluding modding) are SSAA & VSR/DSR, but .ini tweaks like for The Witcher 3 I wouldn't count as extreme/modding (contentious, I know).

Even with the 2 rare examples you picked. I have issue with you use of the word "ever"?
So the Titan X Pascal which is already out can't do it? And any future cards won't be capable? Really?
The TXP will do it with a few exceptions, but not for long. As for ever (not to be taken literally, i.e. until the Sun burns out, but for the next decade let's say - which is forever in PC hardware), I still say yes because games will also advance in demands so GPUs won't really keep up. Hell, a lot of games now are still gimped a lot because hardware can't keep up (e.g. The Witcher 3).

OK so

or

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/sapp...-pci-express-rgb-graphics-card-gx-37b-sp.html

is the choice.

Am I *really* going to be able to tell the difference between them? £4 difference too, sounds like a coin flip...

Tbh the sapphire card will be slightly faster taking the boost clocks into account. They both have the same garrantee (3 years) but realistically both are good cards. So can't go wrong with either :-D

Powercolor is the Devil one isn't it? Already pushed that to one side.

Forgot to ask if anyone knows how quiet the sapphire nitro+ and XFX GTR XXX compare with each other, if there is any difference at all? Think this will be the deciding factor

I've been using the GTR xxx (non Black edition) for a while now and it plays everything I've thrown at it nice and smooth and thats at 1440p. I don't have the latest games that seem to be difficult to run, but Crysis 3 plays real nice on "high" in game settings 'frinstance at 1440p. Mine o/clocks to about 1400 for benching, but running at stock is where I normally leave it. Its also very quiet and only hits the mid 60s when benching though that is with the fan set to 100%.
Well happy with the performance of this card.:)

That was my experience as an actual user of such a card with hundreds of games in my library.

I realise that can't stand against such an extensive library of hundreds of tests that have been proven to be accurate and never ever had any agenda whatsoever :)

Ok XFX GTR XXX is in the basket, got the edge as someone pointed out it's quieter of the two.

One stupid thing that is stuck in my head about this though, will Geralt's hair still flow? Or will Nvidia cards only do that?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ORDER WITH OVERCLOCKERS UK!

We have sent you the order confirmation by email.

XFX is on the way. If I'm not happy I'm coming for *all* of you! 60fps 4k VR better work
