Part worn tyres = false economy

Will it still be a requirement post EU for new tyres imported to this country to have the ratings for braking/noise/economy?

I would imagine so as all current EU laws are likely just going to be grandfathered on to our own statute books.

Don't you think that in order to secure trading deals there is a chance that this may not happen? If China for example want to dump all her rubber easily in this country?

I don't think tyres are that expensive that buying part worns are a justified option.

My last few cars i've managed to buy full sets of 4 tyres for all of them for under £400 fitted. I've had PS3, AD08R, Nankang NS-2R, F1 Asy 3, Hankook v12 Evo2, etc. ranging from 16 inch to 18 inch. I even managed to get a full set of Rainsport 3 for my RS Clio when i bought a cheap set of 15 inch wheels for £160 fitted.

If you can't afford to run massive wheels and tyres, then you shouldn't have the car is my opinion.

Also annoys me when people buy the cheapest tyre available. I enquired about a set of tyres to replace the tyres on my wifes C-Max, because it came with rubbish tyres, which i told the guy and he came back with the cheapest we've got it bla bla bla (some chinese cheapo tyre probably no better than what was already on the car).

Unfortunately - in my experience - price is the only thing that the vast majority of the buying public care about with tyres.

Yup. Colleague had a flat. Went to KwikFit equivalent and bought the cheapest - Runway. Same thing happened again a few months later.

She said she couldn't afford more expensive tyres, but can afford an A1 on lease with 17"s...

Another problem is that many people don't know that you can buy tyres online for MUCH less than KwikFit charge..

Same here, as long as there black and round, they don't care....

My 2p

Don't skimp on tyres, not saying go and pay £200+ a corner but remember...it's the only thing connecting you to the road!.

Never buy 'part worn's'!!, you know nothing about the tyres history and age (tyres have a shelf life of 5 years)

My previous car game with new ditch finders (Nexens) fitted by the dealer. The side walls were splitting within 2 months and wet grip could only be described as scary :/

People here keep putting part worn tires on motorcycles.. I cringe every time considering the tires I use are track tires and are only $240 for a pair

When I was younger hooning around in a £500 Saxo with a £1000 stereo I would often buy part worn tyres to replace the ones id worn out wheel spinning around the town centre on a Friday night.

Now I wouldn't touch them with a ****** stick. For me I dont like the idea of putting my wife in a car with tyres I know may be sub standard.

I spare no expense when it comes to my cars. It's one thing you shouldn't ever skimp on, as a poorly maintained car can kill yourself and others very easily.

If you've got a 4x4 and a flat in one tyre, finding a matching part worn of the same brand would be of great relief. Otherwise you'd have (or want) to replace all 4. Perhaps this is the source of numerous part worn tyres.

my wife used to buy part worns. £20 for a tyre seems amazing value for money. apart from when it needs replaced 2 months later.

spend £100 on a tyre and get a few years out of them is the way to go. i had a continental last 6 years once however the other 3 continentals had long gone by then. I don't know what made that specific tyre last so long but wish I could order a batch of them.

I believe there is a business in part worn tyres from European mainland where certain countries I believe (I've been told, never checked) insist on changing tyres on an axel or even all 4 wheels if you replace 1. This might be miles off, but seem to recall I was told this. So drive from showroom, get a flat, replace all 4 hence the big business.

Welcome confirmation of this story or rebuttal.

I was told it was per axle. But this was by the people selling them so always pinch of salt.

My bosses old man had an Audi A8 and had to replace all 4 at once even if it was one puncture or a worn set on an axle, Audi reasoning was that it would damage the differential if the tyres had different levels of tread.

wouldnt touch part worns, and tbh i dont like cheap new tyres either unless budget forces me to it.

its a simple situation, doesn't matter how much power, how good the brakes are, how low the centre of mavity or how fancy the suspension, at the end of the day all of that is for nowt if the bit that actually connects it to the road is sub-standard.
