Tax - Self Assessment

Base class 2 NIC's are £2.80 a week so just under £150 a year, your NI is calculated along with any other tax payments automatically.

It now gets paid with your self assessment, fill in form accurately and it will give the required payment at the end, national insurance is 'taken first' from any payments made to HMRC (says on the 'totals' page iirc).

Thanks, the issue is i'm not doing it myself and my accountants seem useless. I sent them my stuff a week ago and they phoned on friday to warn me its getting close to the deadline .

I over payed tax a while ago and have not claimed it back, do you think it'll get automatically paid with that?

Completed mine a few months ago for the properties I rent out in the UK.

Tend to do it on my own its quite easy. I use the ABC software.

Paid the bill on Saturday..........

The only difficulty I have is paying the damn bill from an overseas account......its a ball ache.

-Panthro........its a little late buddy, as someone else said getting your login code etc takes time. Its a postal only job AFAIK. No major drama, suck up the 100 quid fine and pay it in the next 3 months.

Phoned my accountant and the girl that answered was no help at all. I still dont know how to pay my class 2 NIC. She said i could pay online, but i dont know the exact ammount and don't have an online account as Ive always had an accountant do my tax.

I thought tax didn't have to be taxing? :(

Also looks like I might have to pay class 3 now I haven't worked for a year.

Just paid my bill earlier in the day after Barclays refused the payment and I had to call their fraud team, good to see they are checking things like this.

Sometimes they can be a bit over zealous. I pay the same person up to £60k by card each month and have done for 3 and half years and this month the barclays fraud team blocked it as suspicious...........

Just paid my £600 bill thanks to Child Benefit. Made the mistake of not keeping surplus cash in the account, so had to suck up the £2 something or other credit card fee :(

The Mrs SA was £1.50 and she rented a property out that tax year... no fair.

I am just doing mine. This is a real pita.

Does anyone else have foreign stock? I'm struggling to add this accurately on the list (or maybe just doing it wrong). I get US based stock grants each year. Etrade takes the tax off for me when I sell them....but all my etrade statements are in USD and the UK portal wants me to enter a GBP sum.

Yes I do. Same situation with E*Trade.

I believe that all the tax is handled for me, certainly that's what all the tons of paperwork I get indicates. Lots of withholding tax and so on paid.

I have done my own tax this year, but if I get an accountant to do it next year, and it transpires I messed up this years, can they go back and claim overpaid tax?

PS anyone on 40%+ tax bands, don't forget normally you can claim 20% extra relief on pension contributions! I had not had to SA before, so rang the tax office and have gone back and claimed several year's worth!

Cheers

It was probably their sanctions software automatically detecting something it didn't like. All banks have to pass every payment through automated checks.

Yeah you're right, but it does say that it's only for amounts over £2500.

okey quick question guys please,

I have just completed my return and as it takes a couple days to appear in my homepage how can I pay whats owed in time? as payment is suppost to be today aswell.

Don't want to end up with any fines.......again

why do people insist on waiting until the deadline day to do the return and pay it. gives you no leeway in the event of an issue when completing the return. The tax year ends on the 5th of April, thats just shy of 10 months you have to get your paperwork together and get it submitted and paid.

If only we were all that wise :D

Hey man, I left mine till almost deadline day, and I don't know jack diddly squat about these facts and figures.

I just know once my girlfriend completes my return I have to pay someone (could be the girlfriend) a few thousand pounds.

I usually get the paperwork done in the summer, hand it to my accountant around September, then relax and wait for his letter "Raymond, you got to pay X" around start of January.

How hard is this to DIY, assuming relatively simple circumstances like a rental property, some odd jobs type work, and some contract work? I'm guessing simple, if you're not thick? This wouldn't be for this year :p.

I found it fairly straightforward, but I keep a record of everything and and got it all sorted well before the deadline. The missus didn't have anything to hand and left it till last week to get done and found it stressful!
