Decided to change my 2010 194bhp Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 crdi premium for a 2015-ish Fiesta. I drive a new i30 so the wife has been struggling with the Santa Fe due to its bulk.
How noticable are the differences between the 2 outputs at title?

Is the difference in these down to a simple map or is it something bigger? Have thought about getting one to replace my Micra in a year or 2 and would go for the auto but that only comes in the 100bhp variety. Would love to get that one and map it to the 125!

IIRC the 125 turbo is more durable. I wouldn't want to remap the 100 to the same power levels.

I had a 125 Fiesta and thought it was a hoot - thoroughly recommended and a great chassis. Just bear in mind it isn't economical if you drive it flat out everywhere. I could hit 45mpg on a long run but generally got around 35 day to day.

Is that all? I know driving styles, locations, journeys etc are all very different but I see that from a 1.5 tonne Superb with a 220ps 2.0 TSI engine. A Fiesta half the size with half the power surely doesn't only get the same economy?

I had a 125 Focus, and yes it's a heavier car but I was lucky to get early 40's MPG from it. I found it really bad on long runs, it was economical driving through country roads but the gearing is a bit off so it's revving quite high at 70.

I think I averaged 37-38 in my ownership

Great engine though, a lot of fun. Anyone who ever got in my car was always amazed that it was only 1 litre

Ford cars seem to be heavy on petrol

Like a 2.0ltr focus ST gets about 25mpg where a 2.0ltr Golf GTI is meant to get about 35mpg (think a golf gti is only around 100kgs lighter)

Averaging 44.7 MPG at the moment in mine, and I'm not the slowest of drivers.

Agree with that though :) Still amazes me at times.

I have a 125 1.0l ecoboost fiesta zetec s as a courtesy car at the moment whilst my ST is being fixed.

It is a nice little engine. Very quiet and pretty refined.

Actually has a decent bit of poke in 2nd gear above 3500rpm and the turbo means it usnt painful to drive.

It has very long gearing and you have to rev it to get the best from it.

It is obviously very gutless and noticeably much slower compared to my mountuned ST though.

Also driving it in a similar fashion to my ST has seen it only get a few mpg more on my work commute over the past 3 days. That is pretty poor considering how much slower it is. I average 40mpg in my ST andd the average for this so far is 43 :/.

I experienced the same when I borrowed one. It was only getting a few more mpg than my ST for significantly less performance. No where near the official figures :/

It definitely depends heavily on whether you get to the boost threshold or not. Keeping it below it and also off boost when above you can get good results. The best I've managed is 58mpg over a 200 mile trip from the Lake District down south. On the other hand when pushing on I've seen as low as 24mpg. 13 on track :D

Except that the gearboxes are made of chocolate, and anything much above the factory 140's specs is a ticking timebomb.
Wonder how well the drive shafts and the standard clutch can take the extra power..

As I seen many MK2 focus ST owners saying they had to replace there drive shafts (but then then again a chipped focus ST is far more heavy and powerful)

But that would be awful. You would then be pretty much just driving a 1.0L :p

To be fair , i have been hanging on to second and third gear a lot which is probably why my mpg isn't that great, but this is just because 4th and 5th hardly have any power at all.

Don't get me wrong, I do quite like the engine actually and can certainly see why it is popular for the Fiesta/Focus standard models. It is much nicer than any diesel car i have driven as it is lovely and quiet. I just thought it would be a bit more frugal.

The Focus also has the benefit of a 6 speed box whilst the Fiesta is stuck with a 5 speed. I don't know how the final ratios compare but in the Fiesta I always felt like I was on boost in 5th when cruising on the motorway which didn't help mpg.
