Do you change oil every 5,000 miles?

Mainly for diesel owners. I would think diesels with turbos would benefit from oil changes before the recommended 20k from some manufacturers.

no.... I trust BMW to know about the servicing requirements far better than me. I'd be doing it every 6 weeks otherwise...

Regular changes like that are needed if you use poor quality lubricants.... or you've got some fire breathing ultra high tuned performance car....

Depends on what car it was and what I was using it for.

Daily driver would drop the oil at the recommended time like 10k.

I just had the oil changed in my wifes focus st, it was last done in march and shes been on mat leave since september so hasnt done a lot of miles (i think she only does about 6,000 normally anyway). The car actualy advised that we change it even tho it hadnt even been in a year. I realise this is mainly due to lack of miles driven but i dont see how some cars can go 20,000 miles between oil changes.

I am surprised people still trust the German Auto Industry to provide reliable information about anything :)

I know, right? Look at all these engines failing left, right, and centre because their mug owners are changing the oil every 10-20k as per the stupid service schedule and not every 5k!

Wait.. :p

Every 12 months or 10k whichever comes first is what my local indie recommends for my car now it's getting on with the mileage (just hit 115k)

I service my car when the car tells me to.

If you don't have a car that tells you, follow the service guide.

Since I am paying for a used BMW warranty I really can't find much value in going above and beyond with expenditure on the car. I'd never own my current vehicle without the extended warranty.

Having said that, even if I were driving around in an older car which had no warranty alongside it, I'd still follow the recommended servicing schedule.

no - I follow normal Ford servicing schedule on my 2012 Focus

but from experience I think oil can be used a lot longer than people really figure

my 1998 Civic VTI -I think 9k recommended changes from memory - I think I averaged about 25k oil changes, up to about 40k was the worst

the bodywork fell apart long before the engine showed any signs of giving way - when I took it to the scrapyard (not engine related) - it had done near 180k miles

and this is on a high revving engine - I reckon I took it to 8k revs multiple times a day (red line 8,300)

maybe Honda build quality though - as it was still on the original clutch when scrapped too !

I figure some of it is like overclocking your CPU - are you reducing the life of your CPU by increasing volts/overclocking ... possibly - to a life that matters - probably not - ie maybe 10 years instead of 20

depends if you need your engine to last till 400k :)

Diesels are a different beast compared to any petrol engine including high rev ones like the VTI's. If changing oil every 5k at a cost of £30 helps in extending the life of the turbo and other expensive to replace parts i would do it without hesitation

Why do you think it will help? Simply because more often = better?

Modern oils are pretty good when it comes to stability and not being broken down into dirty thin dish water in a few thousand miles.

My girlfriend hasn't changed the oil in her diesel C3 for 20k miles (4 years), and she only does stop start journeys. I moan at her every month to get it serviced and her and her dad just go on about how it's only done 29k miles, it's basically brand new, doesn't need it

Every time I drive it it amazes me it's still running. It drives like poo as well
