Rhino killed in zoo

Yes but on the plus side lots of Chinese people will now have some medicine for fever, gout etc...

Well at least those Chinese people who are still so ******* stupid they believe in traditional Chinese cures.

Pretty unbelievable that this has happened even in a Zoo! :(

This makes me genuinely angry. What scum.

I also wonder what we will look like to future generations - especially if this type of rhino does become extinct because if it does the cause will inarguably have been the massive poaching. Can you imagine how we will look? Oh yes - and they killed all the rhinos because some of them thought grinding up their horns and drinking it would cause an erection. How utterly, stupefyingly sad and pathetic that will be.

Why was the zoo's security so inadequate? They should have armed guards patrolling if they have trespassers bringing firearms onto the premises. CCTV is about as useful as a split condom in preventing targeted crime.

Apparently the high demand is in Vietnam.

It's rife throughout East Asia. China mostly likes bits of tiger though. I think Thailand likes bits of Gorilla.

And well...Africa too where they love bits of albino people.

I just can't understand it at all. If it really is so valuable surely it should be increasing the conservation of them.

A quick Google suggests if they're properly cut then the horn will grow back in a few years.

It's a disgusting practise but if they feel they have to do it why wipe out their supply by killing the poor creatures :(.

The sad thing is that, contrary to what you might hope, the practice of "traditional medicine" isn't waning with the younger generations.

Plenty of asian twenty-somethings, with full access to Google and modern science, are choosing to ingest tiger penis/ rhino horn to "cure" their ailments.

It's a zoo in Paris, I'm not sure they ever expected poachers to even attempt it in the first place. Having armed guards is a bit excessive.

This is the first time it's happened in a European zoo. It's not like you expect this sort of thing to happen.

You gonna call Chester and tell them to set up a machine gun nest in their rhino enclosure?

I guess we can't look down on them too much - the NHS still funds homeopathy, even our current heir to the throne is dumb enough to believe in it

Why care about how we look?

That's a rather inane reason to care about... do we care that much that we slaughtered several species as it is? The answer is and always will be no.

The only valid reason for saving the Rhino is for biodiversity, but then you can just justify it as the species being no longer fit to survive with ours dominant... Vanity projects are just as bad as the reasons to kill them in the first place.
