Hi all

Clocked speeding at 54mph in a 40mph road.

No excuses but the road itself no one ever drives 40mph or under on. Three cars in front of me before the camera were definitely going quicker than 40 too. But the speed limits are what they are so im not trying to excuse myself.

It says to meet the safety awareness course criteria i have to have been going no more than 53mph in a 40 zone. So im 1mph out.

Never been clocked speeding in 15+ years of driving so im not sure whats involved now? Bit worried about it. :/

So youve had the NIP through? Fill it in, send it back and hopefully you'll be lucky enough to get offered a speed awareness. Depends on how good of a day the person who handles your form is having....

What? It doesn't depend on that at all - it depends if his speed meets the threshold for a course offer, which he doesn't

Some of them will use common sense/discretion when its so close. It's the best he can hope for.

Fill in form > Pay online > Send form and driving licence off to address > Feel like a criminal for a few hours.

Wouldn't worry about the points. I got my first 3 in December and they haven't made a difference to any insurance quotes I've been running.

No they won't, certainly not nowadays anyway. He'll be getting 3 points so not the end of the world really.

Shrug, my friend was 2mph over the limit for speed awareness and still got offered it as it was his first offense.

Did he get pulled by a copper though.

I got pulled at 40 in a 30. It used to be a 40 but was lowered to a 30 and my tomtom hadn't been updated and told me it was a 40. No excuse I know.
It was gone 23:30 and they were there to pull young lads near the MCd drivethrough. As I was nice to the bobby and from out of the area. He said I am above the limit but he will recommend a driver awareness course.

Course was offered and I accepted.

So it looks like the police can have a little sway.

That sucks, Basically because whenever I have seen this happen they typically do it with little publicity and change the limit to 30 simply by unbolting the 40 lollipops.

Of course cue the Talivan a week later to "Enforce" the new limit.

People who are regular users of the road just dont see it coming...

I got done doing 43 in a 30 a while ago. The cheeky fella was standing at the bottom of a hill in all black clothing pointing a laser up to the top of the hill.

3 points and £100 fine (first offence may I add.)

So the safety awareness course is to go on instead of paying the fine and 3 points as long as you're in the threshold?

As I was over the threshold, annoyingly by just 1mph albeit, I would have to take the 3 points and £100 penalty as well?

Wouldn't matter what he was wearing if you were doing the speed limit, you were nearly 50% over the limit and it's the coppers fault for wearing black

Right now you have only 2 options: say you were driving or say someone else was.

Just fill in the form telling them who was driving and you'll find out in due course whether you can attend a course or not.

Most likely because the police officer wrote a lower speed than what he was actually caught at so he would get offered the course. Once the speed reading has been submitted, the central ticket office have no discretion to offer a course or not, it's based purely on the numbers.

It is a bit underhand. But nowhere was I told I could go 40. Thats how they can get away with it. They did the same in my home town. 30 past a college then 40. They took the 40 signs away meaning it stayed a 30 limit.

at 80k+ miles per year. 3 points and 3 speed awareness courses I count myself pretty lucky
