MINI Cooper s GP 2006 edition? Or facelift 2013 GP edition?

No way. Was it?

You're telling me that a 40k hatchback seriously isn't faster than a £150k track weapon? Really?

What everyone seems to be missing in this is the following:

1) The event they were at isn't a race, it's either a track day or a touristenfahrten, a tourist session. The cars there must yield if a quicker car approaches from behind, no matter what it is. They could also have been on a cool down lap, or just cruising around. People do.

2) Sabine knows the Nurburgring better than most people. The people driving the 997 GT3 and the Gallardo probably don't, and I highly doubt they have the skills required to get close to their car's recorded lap records on the lap, unlike Sabine, who probably can in a car as approachable as a Golf.

3) And finally, the Golf isn't that slow at all. It's only 7s slower than the 997 GT3, and 9s slower than the Gallardo on a lap around the 'Ring.

This is why no one really values your opinion on cars or driving, to the point that I'm *almost* convinced that you are trolling. :)

I confess to trying to wind you all up yea, over semantics of what is and isn't a drivers car. I don't think a fwd car will ever be a drivers car to me.

I was being sarcastic ;)

I'm sure if Sabine set a time in all those cars the Golf wouldn't hold a candle to them.

Both good examples of Mini's.

The GP1 features a GP specifc body kit, interior, wheels, intercooler, suspension etc
The GP2 is a JCW with some stickers

Due to the above the GP1 feels a more special car and it was made in a lot lower numbers.

It depends if you are going to modify the car as well and what you want from it. Its very easy and cheap to get a GP2 to 280+bhp with remap, intercooler and exhaust.

A GP1 is cheap to get to 230-240bhp. After that it gets very expensive to get anywhere near 280bhp with the need for performance heads etc.

The GP2 as you say is cheaper to run as the GP1 is relatively thirsty and high on tax.

For me I am addicted to the supercharger whine, I have owned all three generations of the new mini and I currently own a 1st gen supercharged R53 Cooper S and the 2014 3rd gen 2.0 turbo F56 Cooper S, which I have mapped to 300bhp :)

The 2nd gen for me with its Pug engine is a worry, however the GP2 from memory does have the N18 engine which is stronger than the N14. Both pug engines however the N14 was revised to the N18 to try and solve some of the reliability issues. I always worried with my 2nd gen Clubman JCW(N14) was going to go bang at any point, I dont have that same fear with the other two I now own. This shouldn't worry you so much as the N18 is stronger, but its why I didn't consider a 2nd gen when building a track car.
that whine, OOHHH that whine, i love it, thats is the main reason i want a gen 1 gp but the gen 2 is more practical for tax, fuel etc..

but i suppose it wasnt designed to be the worlds most casual ride lol.

Lets not get too carried away, its a great fwd hot hatch that's genuinely sporty, but its not a proper drivers car just by virtue of it being fwd.

that is bs, i have owned two 350z cars, RWD and they are only faster than the minis in a straight line..and thats the STANDARD r53 MCS that i have had, so im sure on a track the GP 1 or gen 2 would be right up a "proper drivers car" ass.

Some fell for it! :D

I've being in a diesel Golf driven by a professional Porsche cup driver at Donnington and we overtook everyone in a 130BHP Golf diesel. It was absolutely hilarious, people asking what it was to which response just a 130TDi Golf, oh the driver often wins the Porsche cup races here and at Oulton Park so knows it well.

Driver and track knowledge is everything! Some people need to learn and understand this, Sabine is one of the fastest ring drivers on the planet.

Back to subject, FWD can be fun, as can RWD and AWD. They all drive differently and all have their place. A Mini GP is huge fun particular on a big open track where you can truly chuck it around, on a normal b-road not as much but still fun and capable. My preference is when I am in the mood to use talent and skill is RWD, when I just want to make fast progress northing beats 4WD/AWD on the road, unless your very talented and not many people are talented to drive RWD on the road at 10/10's in all conditions, whereas it is easier in AWD, though it still take skill.

You clearly aren't a real driver if you think that a 350z is a "real drivers car", it's a heavy GT..

A mx5 mk1 is a real drivers car, and a 350z and a Cooper S that my girlfriend drives would be faster than it on almost any track. Maybe you need to drive more cars before you start wading in bragging about stuff that isn't all that impressive?

The snobbery. Just who the hell do you think you are?

OP forget about road tax and fuel economy.... Just buy either one of the cars (both if you have the monies). You wont regret it!

I have not meant to come across as snobbish, for that i apologise, i just wanted to state that i have had car experience in the motors department, and as for both i wish, they are holding there value incredibly well, but im leaning towards gen 1, as its stealing my heart more, and when i had the r53 it wasnt the worst in teh world really as an all rounder car.

I don't think he meant you :p

But yeh, think of hurfdurfs opinion on cars as a bad case of tinnitus - it's not useful, it's annoying, it's always there when you don't want it, but you learn to just ignore it.
