New Pound Coins

I wish we could just abolish physical currency. Apple/Android pay, contactless cards, it should be enough. It's 2017.

PDQ machines are not always rock solid and are inconvenient for those without a wired internet connection or great mobile signal. They also require a lot ag with PCI compliant and audit forms depending on how many machines your business has. The business is very lucrative for PDQ terminal leasers as they charge you a fixed amount for the machine, as well as a transaction fee.

As much as it would be nice to get rid of physical currency, there is a huge inconvenience associated with doing without and to be honest, physical currency is not that bad at all, despite how trendy it is to bash it.

If you dont want to use it, then you have that choice. Shouldnt matter to you if other people use physical currency.

Wow, really?
Sort of, the law still existed but was not enforceable as it had long been voided by a newer law. So while it technically existed on paper until it was repealed it wasn't a "real" thing.

There are actually many many laws that have been superseded and not repealed (because there's no point wasting the time). I.E the law that allowed the execution of Welshmen inside the walls of Chester under certain circumstances was never repealed because the law against murder superseded it centuries ago.

Yep, same that its currently legal to shoot a Scotman with a bow and arrow inside the walls of York.

Has High Treason being superseded then?

Well you cannot be executed for treason if that's what you mean.

Well no, that sentence option was ended in 1998. However AFAIK high treason still stands and carries a life sentence and sleeping with the Queen's husband is still high treason and hasnt been superseded.

You're making the assumption that his machines would accept a fake coin anyway.
Our machines are calibrated to accept coins within a tolerance of the Mints coin specs, doesn't meet that machine won't accept it. Our cash is counted by G4 and I've never seen anything in the fake column on our banking spreadsheet.

Do you calibrate parking ticket machines as well? - swear nearly every time I need to buy a ticket half of my real coins get rejected (I assume they are slightly worn and so don't meet the tolerances set)

They had a piece about this on BBC breakfast last week and they interviewed a chap who owned a vending machine company and it was costing him £250,000 to update all of his machines. That's a staggering amount of money to fork out everytime a new coin is launched. I presume that's out of their own pockets and they can't claim any of that back?

And who decides they are fake? If the machine didnt pick up on it, does a person physically check every coin later? And the banks dont check them. They weigh that bags and thats it.

We have a coin machine and get about 1000 pound coins a month. They are all bagged and banked and never any rejected. When bagging them I do notice the odd very dodgy looking coin but bag it anyway. I very much doubt that out of 12,000 coins a year there arent quite a few fake ones.

Out of his profits????? tax relief etc. I suppose its just part and parcel of the costs that every so often you will get a hit.

Also the costs are directly proportional to the number of machines, really it is very little per machine compared to what it makes in the grand scheme of things and overall running costs. Hearing 250k for all his machine costs just make think 'Wow the guy must be loaded to have that many machines on the go'. They also changed the width of 5 and 11p coins by 11% just a few years ago and not all that many machines needed to be changed.

Yeah the pay out seems big but it is not like the business has tons of costs and the machine wont make its money back within a week by itself.

No thanks. They're not 100% reliable and over a certain amount, your money isn't even secure. Cash is king and will be for a very long time. If my battery on my phone is dead or if the Internet is down in an area for whatever reason, how do I pay for stuff? Nah fam.

What's the date got to do with anything as well?

Years ago I did hear that royal mint changed metal content of one pence coin and the payphones in schools were full of them - seems payphone thought it was a 20p coin -- BT had to go round programing them to ignore 20p coin :)

So much this!

Anyone who has done their time supporting a retailer or dealing with 123send/worldpay or anything like that knows not to rely on just card.

What?

There are usually a dozen machines in a medium sized shop nowadays, without them all failing due to some connection issue, it shouldn't be a problem.

Regardless the only thing stopping digital currency usage is the government, they should make it a civil right to be able to process debit/credit either for free or subsidised when it comes to quick card payments.

Leaving the process to private enterprise is just going to end up with businesses eventually creating their own currencies.
