Do you get paid for untaken holiday?

Just checked my holiday file online, I carried over 70 hours from 2016, and currently have a total of 190 hours annual leave entitlement earnt at the moment. (I work 8 hr days, monday-friday)
I have 40 hours booked for end of May for a 1 week break to Cyprus with family.

That leaves me 150 hours currently (my company doesnt do it annually, its just totals earnt and it builds and builds over time, no resetting, nothing. We earn 13.33 hours per month (20 days per year) 8 bank holidays are mandatory to take. But when I leave they would pay me in full for all outstanding holiday owed, so in theory if i accured 300 hours over the years that were untaken, I'd get that as alump sum final payment when I leave.

I started in Jul 13. So from August 2013 I earnt 66.67 and used 64.
2 rolled over.

2014 I earnt 160 hours (plus 2 rolled over). 162 total.
Used 128 hours.
34 hours rolled over.

2015 I earnt 160 (plus 34 rolled over). 194 total.
Used 160 hours.
34 hours rolled over.

2016 I earnt 160 (plus 34 rolled over). 194 total.
Used 126 hours.
70 hours rolled over.

2017 I will earn 160 total (plus 70 hours rolled over). 230 total
This gives me 28.75 days total + 8 bank holidays.
Of course any I don't take rolls over again...

We can apply to carry 5 days into the following year however they need to be used by the end of January, unless you can show exceptional circumstances.

We forced people to take their holidays throughout the year, if you had any left you lose them. What was happening was people would end up with too many holidays towards the end of the year and we would end up short staffed.

I live in tourist town and quite a few business and even larger companies can find themselves short staffed and find it hard to let everyone have time off due to needing everyone during the holidays, that's why they choose to pay people for untaken holidays.

Pretty sure the only time you care allowed to pay someone instead of taking their holidays is when they leave you employment.

Getting paid instead of taking holidays
The only time someone can get paid in place of taking statutory leave (known as ‘payment in lieu’) is when they leave their job. Employers must pay for untaken statutory leave (even if the worker is dismissed for gross misconduct). - From Gov.uk

I have to take mine or lose them. But my Dad can either choose to get paid for leftovers or let them carry over. He is on quite an old contract though which they don't offer to anyone else now.

no, that's just a legal requirement, many companies allow you to buy or sale days

Just wondering what your workplace does if you haven't had a chance to take any holidays, does your employer just pay you for the untaken days instead at the end of the tax year?
Sometimes in special cases we can carry over a few but we never get paid for unused days. You lose them.

If you can't take them due to workload, ask for help.

Think we only get paid untaken holiday if you leave the company. Otherwise untaken holidays are rolled over to the following year.

Ours role over. Although it's very fast and loose here. I had two days off recently which I took 'for free'. Mentioned to my manager about booking leave and he hastily said just to take the days I need and we'll sort it later. Later came and nothing else was said. He would've forgotten about it by now. Currently sitting on about 23 days leave.

It's an unspoken rule here that you don't take leave until the project you're running comes to an end. Then you take a few days off for free to make up for any unpaid over time you had to do.

It's not uncommon to hear about staff members here having 8-9 weeks of leave saved up.

Ours works by birth month so everyone's entitlement runs to a different schedule, stops the 'Oh crap it's nearly December, need to use up my holiday' rush from a whole company

The company has a legal obligation to ensure the employee has a minimum of 20 days off (EU legislation). UK legislation dictates we have 28 days annual leave, and even though it is illegal to just pay holiday pay in leiu of taking it, there is this grey area about unused holiday pay over the 20 and whether it is just lost, rolled over or paid if untaken by the end of the year,

We have to save X amount of days for the Christmas shut down and bank holidays, however if there is any left over we get them paid in the last wage before the Christmas break.

Fyi, if a company does pay you for unpaid leave, they can only pay you for untaken leave over the statutory minimum. This is to stop employees dropping below the required statutory min leave requirements.

I wish I did. I get 30 days holiday as standard because I've been at my company for years now but I'd carried 5 over last year meaning I had 35 days to use total. Because I work from home a lot and I've got quite a bit of flexibility I ended up with 16 days left at the end of the year and can only carry 5 over, meaning I lost 11 days.

My fault obviously and in a way I don't really care since everything still works out in my favour in one way or another, but getting an extra 11 days pay would have been quite nice :)

Last year (2015/2016), i was able to save 10 days holiday and roll it on to the next year as i went on a 7 week holiday to NZ / OZ / Dubai, so i was paid throughout. This year though, (2016/17), i was only able to carry 5 days over.

I get to keep up to 10, any more is lost unless we can get it signed off. I had 42 days leave this year :D

This is the same for me, 10 day carry over and no more unless special approval has been given. Need to use 7 days this month otherwise I'll loose them!
