What if WW3.....

Still time yet to get that training in :p

If you have seen the footage of the Russian Ultras at the Euro's vs the Overweight English lot drinking beer and subsequently getting battered.....that's an example of how the Russian Conscripts vs the English Conscripts would turn out in WW3 :D

I live in Reading. They make our nukes in Burghfield and Aldermaston; about 3 miles from Reading. Id just be smoke ~10seconds into ww3.

Touch and go for me surviving any initial strike - I'm just outside the effects of the more likely ~500-800kt warhead that would be used on the nearest known target but 50/50 on surviving if they used something bigger - also an unknown on whether they'd attack the nearby military industrial complex - its more likely to be a target for cruise type missiles than nuclear.

you can always do what any forward thinking pacifist would do- join up and when it gets to actual combat just make a show of firing in the vague direction of the enemy while not trying to actually hit anything.
Forward-thinking ones would surely seek support roles, perhaps in the medical field?

i recall a statistic from ww2 that the americans worked out it was something like 75000 rounds of ammunition expended per enemy casualty- that's the reality of a conscript army for you, people fighting poorly either intentionally or just because they aren't professional soldiers.
No, that's the reality of the human mind, and our ability to find various tactical solutions that limit our exposure to incoming rounds - We'll hide, we'll dig holes, we'll zig-zag, we'll run away... We certainly won't just stand there and let ourselves be shot, just so some bean-counter's statistics look good!!

So that's 75,000 rounds of small arms ammo... how many rounds of artillery per kill? 0.1 per enemy dead? 0.05?
Artillery is generally THE biggest killing weapon on the battlefield, bar none and pretty much more than all the other methods combined.

Something else the stats probably don't factor in - One single round through the gut of one soldier = one soldier disabled, two more out of action while casevaccing him, possibly a fourth in the form of the platoon medic, and the rest demoralised. Get the platoon Sergeant or the radio operator and you may well put a whole platoon out of combat effectiveness without a single actual kill. It doesn't always take a sniper to achieve this, either... Whole columns of French troops were routed by some well-placed rounds from a few skirmishers during the Peninsular War, for example. A lesson not forgotten.

or going to Prison or Shot dead....I'd take the latter two.
You'd take guaranteed certain suffering over the chance to make it through unharmed?
Bye then... Can I have your graphics card after you're gone? :)

I wonder if they would try to draft up women of the same fighting age....as we are all so equal these days.
I imagine they would, although roles may be more limited. They'd likely get quite a few volunteers first, though.

Not sure you would get to play many games after WW3 has hit.....and its more of a principle.....I'm not a pacifist, its that I refuse to fight and give my life for our elected Elite to play games, where they themselves risk very little....they certainly wouldn't fight and if the bombs hit, they and their families would no doubt be squirreled away to safety.

If Russia went mad and decided to invade Europe and the Uk, then I'd fight if that makes sense?

Ah. Yes. Good point....... so can I have it now, then, while I still have time to get some games in? :D

Friend of mine was conscripted into 2 years of National Service in the SADF. He was a pacifist and objected to killing people whose race he did not despise, for a government with whose policies he did not agree. On grounds of religious objection and Thou Shalt Not Kill, he refused to carry a rifle, yet still served in 7-SAI (7th South African Infantry) for a good while, before eventually transferring to Stores at Kimberley.
Just because you don't agree with the war, it doesn't mean you're morally prevented from aiding others who are being shafted by it.

If Russia went mad and decided to invade Europe and the Uk, then I'd fight if that makes sense?
If I'm honest, it'd not be my country I'd fight for, these days. About 50% of the disgusting, ungrateful population really aren't worth my life, but they'd be the ones who'd cower behind the McDonalds Drive-Thru and the X-Factor bust stop adverts, demanding I do my duty to King* and Country while they wibble about their own pitiful existence.

But that's the thing, though - No matter the political machinations and whatever that get you into an unfavourable situation, if you're actually sent to war then you'll be fighting for yourself, your mates next to you and possibly your family back home..... and being 'sent' includes the war coming to your doorstep, a-la Russia invading.

*Yes, "King"... sadly I've had this face-palming argument with such people before and apparently we still have a King. Said so on Page 3 of The Sun, I believe!! :D

Having seen Threads I just hope that any initial nuclear exchange turns me into a puff of dust/vapour/ash/smear on the ground

When that was made the majority of nukes would have been the big dirty low to mid megaton jobs - these days its likely outside of big cities the warheads would probably be in the mid 100s of kt with a lot less in the way of fallout, etc. (especially if they have any plans for using the country afterwards rather than just turn it into a toxic wasteland). Still that is just relative speaking and wouldn't take away much of the horrors of it.

I'd enlist early, as higher chance to get something matched my skills.

But the with the US by massive margins still the worlds military superpower there's no prospect of it what so ever. They idea that Russia would even think of going blow to blow with the US is hilliarous as they be utterly outmatched.

Even in WW1 the total number of conscripted soldiers from the UK was only 44%.. 66% where either voluntary or already serving in the army, 6 million soldiers from the UK went to war and 700,000 died.

Some say Trump being elected to power is proof we are living in a simulation, triggering war is just another step in the program.

A world war would require 2 coalitions of similar strength and there's nothing out there that matches 1/10th NATO's military strength or 1/20th of its industrial strenght.

It's not happening.

but they are part of the nuke making process so id guess its a very 'high up' target for any invading group.
Oh no, they're gonna bomb the AWE paint depot. Then we won't be able to get a nice finish on our missiles. Whatever will we DOOOOOOOOO???!!! :D
Seriously, though, one of those sites is just where they paint the things. Another is where they machine up fins and things. Most AWE sites you know about are just maintenance installations. Where they make and where they keep stuff is still (in theory) pretty secret.

I'd enlist early, as higher chance to get something matched my skills.
Depending on your skills, you may be better off when they have a plethora of bods and can afford to be picky over who goes where. I assume your "skills" would set you above the average benefit claimant cannon-fodder? Until they get that many, you will be doing the job they need the most... especially things like the Ruperts' bum-wiper. :D
