hi
Looking for help on buying a new laptop/computer for gaming
I play strategy games not shoot them ups.
If I go for a computer I want a system were I can hid the box in a cupboard and use wifi to bring the picture to a screen.
I only play at home and as you can see I am not really into the tech side!!!!
Cost needs to be below £350
Thanks

  • What strategy games in particular as some can be quite GPU intensive?
  • What res is your monitor?
  • Will you need an OS, keyboard, mouse etc?
  • Are there any components you have - HDD, PSU?..
£350 is going to be a big ask if you need an OS and if you play gpu intensive strategy games.

Hi

I am interested in playing urban Empires, the new Civ. I have stream account and have seen a advert were you can stream to a monitor? I have an old laptop at present so nothing tobringto the party. Starting from scratch.
What's the cheapest it can be done for. I do have Windows 7

In theory it's a great - I have two and they work surprisingly well with a good connection.

Trouble is you need one of these - Steam link - and it cripples your budget for a build. I'll take look later but you would only have £300 left for a full build as they charge postage.

They do turn up half price in steam sales.

Keeping in mind you now only have £300 (taking off steam link) - this is the best I can do:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £319.56
(includes shipping: £11.70)

You would have to use onboard gfx and i'm not sure how well that would perform with those games - poorly I suspect with CIV.

If you could wait and save up another £100 - it would probably be doable - especially if you got the steam link separate for the budget.

Don't forget a copy of Windows. but that will easily bump it up £90+. Honestly your budget is pretty low for the games you want to run.

He mentions he has Windows 7 in post #6 - hopefully it's not tied to another system - but you can usually blag MS to swap it to another system with enough determination. :)

Thanks for the help so far.
So for the games I want to play (CIV, Urban Empire. Football Manager) how much do I need to spend? I have windows 7 on my laptop, so that looks like another cost then! So I am starting from scratch!!!!

Yep, that will be a hard sell - even to MS.

Well another £30-£50 if you buy windows from elsewhere - oem/builders series but from a large reputable company.

The above system will play your games - but at lower gfx settings and i presume the AI thinking time would be significant...

You would need to search the minimum specs for each game and decide for yourself if it's adequate.

Perhaps look at you tube and see what lower specs people are managing to play the said games on - they usually share their settings for optimum performance.

now that would be nice to have, missus would approve too if it means no linking my tower ha, have they always been £40?.

to the OP, sounds like your better off buying used steam link or not.

They turn up in the Steam Sale quite often - I got mine under half price but they charge £7 P&P.

They work surprisingly well wirelessly - some games better than others - and depends largely on our connection and where your accessing it from.

Ideally you would be hard wired in - I plan to have Cat cable running through the whole house eventually.

for me it be in the same room, my tower is under dining table at end that faces corner of the room and the tv id use it on is about 6-10ft away, it would only be useful to me as a sofa be more comfy than a wooden chair with cushion ha.

is this where youd need the steam controller?

I use a wireless keyboard and mouse - there's lots of clever keyboards and mice out there for sofa users :)

i use wireless k/b & mouse anyways, never like too many cables lol, but the range can be questionable, our sofa is the same side wall my back faces, i just never really understood the benefits of the steam controller.
