Is it now time that our police are all armed?

I still don't think all police should be armed, it's just not needed here. We should increase the number of armed police though

Hard to know how things would have turned out if the first officers to respond were armed but on balance I don't think arming every officer is the solution.

The armed units are under a huge amount of scrutiny for every shot they take and I think if you asked them a lot of officers wouldn't want that responsibility or want to make the choice to take someone's life (outside of terror attacks).

Perhaps more tools to stun or incapacitate would be better, a type of stun grenade or similar.

Armed cops were on the scene in 2 minutes and the 3 attackers were dead within 8 minutes. That is more efficient than most countries where all the police are armed.

Especially considering London doesn't have half the number of police somewhere like New York does.

If that officer who challenged them straight away had a gun, lives would have been saved. I think Police in certain areas should be armed. All Police in central London should be.

I'm sure everyone will disagree with this, but maybe we should also have a new tier of trained door supervisors who are permitted to carry a stunning device and again, pubs and bars in certain areas should be required to use at least one on certain nights, mainly fri, sat, sun.

Again, to repeat what I said in another thread it's just not that simplistic :-

"At the end of the day it's a balancing act, you can't just say reducing tax rates increases the tax take. Let's take that to the ludicrous end conclusion and just have 0%, bumper receipts no? Or how about 0.1%?

There is obviously points where the rate can be set too high, and business do anything to avoid paying it, legally and illegally and conversely where rates are too low that any further reduction is not any further stimulus to business to try and avoid it.

It's also not a single point, but a range, and where Corp Tax rates are around the 20-30% mark I don't see as a big issue"

The problem is that Socialist governments policies almost always set the higher tax rates above the optimum point. Sometimes well above it (As in the 1970's)

To Socialists, Taxation at the higher rates is more about hurting those who they perceive as being their enemies rather than a tool for optimising economic performance and revenue collection.

This is where it all always goes wrong :/

Central london.... why so special... before you know it every city center... then every town then every village and blink every officer is armed and it's police state.

We need more police
We need more armed police

We absolutely do not want to arm them all though. I know two friends who become coppers. Trust me, you don't want to be giving them guns.

I'm very glad that our armed police are held to a rigorous standard. They do an amazing job and we should be proud of them.

I don't think we should arm all of our police. We could never maintain that standard. Police shootings can cause great disunity in society.

No one even knows what the optimum point is - it's all broad theory.

As an ex UK AFO, now living in Australia, I've come round to the idea that all Police should be armed. If an officer cannot be trusted with a gun they should not be in the job. For those currently serving it should be optional but it should be a requirement for all new recruits.

When I'm walking through a shopping centre with my kids and I see two cops on foot patrol openly carrying, I don't feel threatened. I feel relief that should an incident occur there are people there who can immediately deal with it and not have to wait for the ARV.

Obviously a rather different social/political climate here in NI but any police you see walking the street will be carrying a side arm. Hasn't turned us into the US with regards to guns. (ignore all other crap we have here lol).

TBH, I would have no issue with armed police. I don't feel threatened at all when I see armed officers.

I have no issues with the police being armed. I wouldn't have a problem if it helped protect the police and the public. I would say that there has to be development into better non lethal measures that can be fired at range. Tazers are great but, as proven on Mythbusters, knife vs gun in a short distance the knife often wins. Obviously this is exasperated by the deployment procedure the police have to use making them even more open. Longer range methods to incapacitate should be looked at first.

Most Police should have firearms now in my opinion as too many people won't hesitate to assault or stab an officer nowadays it's just the UK we live in now where all the wannabe gangstarzz who copy the real gangs in America have no respect for the police especially in London
