Hong Kong's "coffin cubicles"

It'll never happen. If we're really that worried that humans won't have places to live, we'll build on green belts. It's that simple.

Edit: forgot to say that I am equally horrified. I would hate to live in that tiny space, and your toilet next to your kitchen...doesn't bear thinking about.

"Never"? Green belts are not infinite. There will eventually be a time when we run out of space, the population is increasing. Probably not our lifetimes but to say it'll never happen is foolish.

theres always up and we have built on virtually nothing of the uk yet. Also human population is expected to peak below 10bn before falling back down.

It will stay illegal as well. There's no way we would ever allow that in this country, not when something like just 5% of the country has been built on.

The smallest space you will ever legally be allowed to live in in the U.K would be a room share in a HMO. All these stories of 20 migrants in a one bed flat happen, but are obviously highly illegal.

We are building plenty enough housing to meet the needs of our own population. What we are not doing is building enough to meet the needs of the large numbers of inward migrants.

The solution to this problem is not to build more houses....!
This.

It's hard to believe we could ever run out of space, to be honest.

Here in rural Gloucestershire alone, you could fit the entire contents of the M25 (population circa 10mil) in the green space

I bet they flush with the seat up as well. The poo particles landing on the food...

so what's worse, one of those, or not having a house at all?
not having a house of course, i bet lots of homless peopel would love one of these, and they would be dirt cheap. But no, its better to be homless and why would the goverent need to spend money helping them out.

Good question, if they closed the lid they'd have an additional cutting surface.
As grim as that is.. it got a chuckle from me. :p

Those living conditions look horrendous. There is just mess everywhere. I couldn't imagine how one of those people might feel if they had severe OCD

Statistically the families most likely to have more kids aren't Catholic by a long shot. Try looking towards east Asian families. Not many of them are Catholic!
Maybe so, but of all the caucasian people I know, those with large families are usually catholic.

Yes it's bad, but remember this is Hong Kongs solution to homelessness. I'd rather see 1000 places to live like this than 1000 homeless. London does no have a solution to homelessness.

The solution is actually to not reduce the number of houses built. We dont need to build more, we just need to build at the rate we use to build at. We have the resources and money to build, its just that it is more profitable for landowners and building companies to trickle feed to a desperate market.

People love to blame immigrants but the reality is not that we are running out of anything but rather refusing to fulfil the need for houses that has been created mainly due to a boom in the BTL market.

Blaming migrants creates just another thing to misdirect people from the real problem and until pressure is put to

-building at the rate we use to
-putting more restrictions in the housing market so that a minimum number of new houses are allocated to first time UK residents

this issue will never be solved because most of the places will be snapped up by people looking to rent them to first time buyers that cant get a house.

Really... why wouldn't you at least put the toilet seat down if you've gotta prep food close by!

At first i thought the thread title might have related to small cubes that workers have to sit at for their office jobs.

Frankly that's horrific and must do some serious damage to your mental health.

The problem in London is there's a bad supply & demand problem. There's not enough of a fresh supply of housing that people will be happy to live anywhere. That's why you're getting these rouge landlords turning things like garages and sheds, into one-bedroomed flats. If demand wasn't so high, then these people wouldn't bother, as they know they wouldn't get away with it.
Why, what happens when the toilet seat is down? As unpleasant as that living environment is, the proximity of the toilet and whether its seat is up or down is really the smallest problem here.

It does make me think, whenever people whinge about how we apparently want to "CONCRETE OVER THE WHOLE OF THE UK!!!111" that they've never been to Wales, or Yorkshire, or Scotland, or, you know, anywhere apart from the city they live in. There's loads of green space everywhere, but people would seemingly rather whinge erroneously about how there isn't any than ever actually visit any of it.

Happy to visit and frequently do. Not a fan of destroying it just to whack a load of housing estates up.

and even the ample green spaces we have we cant use properly :(
i wish they would build on green space, but protect national parks and add some, but actually have proper rights for them like Scotland have.

we have a several great long distant hiking trails, but you cant camp on them oh no, you have to spend upwards of £60 a night for hotels and some of them don't even have accommodation available on them in the needed places. This is something scotland, Scandinavian countries and America do very well.
