What watch do you wear?

Automatic perpetual calendars are always going to be pricey things. The thinner they are, the more expensive, usually, as it's a remarkable feat to get that sort of complication inside thin cases.

That Omega one is just obese.

Using Timex expedition indiglo for an year. Apart from changing the straps which gone bad due to sweat, everything works fine and its my everyday runner.

Yeah, the Omega co-axials are a bit chunky anyway even without the extra complication.

Perpetuals are always going to be pricey - here's a few others slightly more reasonably priced:

After some advice guys,

I've got £905 left on a GEMpay card (I lost my wedding ring and there was some balance left over after I had replaced it).

I'm limited to where I can buy from, but most high street retailers are ok.

I've already got a few watches, but after suggestions for something around the £1000/1200 budget.

The only other (annoying) condition is, I can't put this money towards anything pre-owned!.

I was considering an Oris, a Longines, a Tag or a high end G-shock.

I already own an Omega Speedy as my "best" watch.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Oris make some very nice quality pieces at that price point and have plenty of variety to choose from so that would probably be my choice from the brands you list, just ahead of Longines.

I quite like the top of the range MT-G G-Shock models, but they're over your budget.

It kind of depends what sort of thing you're looking for I guess...there are other brands you could look at that are fairly common on the high street like Frederique Constant, Ball, Junghans, Baume et Mercier, Rado etc.. I think Goldsmiths now stock Nomos if you're looking for something with some real 'watch-nerd' street cred ;).

I can stretch to this....

It's hard to pick as this wasn't an expected scenario!

I'd be happy with an Oris Diver

I can stretch to this too, but that's the very top of my budget! The red one is on sale, but sadly I can't redeem the card on sale items :(

I do like that Casio - however I'd definitely need to see it in person and try it on to see how bulky it is.

Yeah - i'll see if they've got one in store so i can have a look. Its quite different and has got a few toys on it. I wear an old Seiko Diver as my daily, the Omega for going out. I also have and old Vertex Revue (also Swiss) which was my grandfather's retirement present - I only wear that on very special occasions.

This Oris is reduced - don't know if it's a sale item or not:

I think I prefer the orange :) but thanks for the heads up

You could also look at Hamilton - another decent brand:

I quite like the look of this:

Thoughts compared to a Hydroconquest?

A casino gshock for over a grand? Jesus christ, the fact you are even considering it shows how much research you need to do before you buy anything. Just calm down and get reading.

You could get a Longines Hydroconquest automatic for less than a grand.

I know - that's why I suggested it in the previous post.....

I came here to get some opinions and suggestions - to avoid the "reading" you referred to.

If the GSHOCk is a big mistake, i'd be grateful to hear why.

Thanks in advance.

You'll always get that sort of reaction to a quartz watch at that price, especially a G-Shock as they're generally regarded as cheap disposable watches. However, it's still a tough, well built watch with GPS and radio time synchronisation, solar power, automatic timezone change etc. so it's a totally different beast to the other watches you're looking at.

The Hamilton will have an ETA movement, so arguably better than the Sellita the Oris usually use. However, in practice there's little to choose between them as the Sellita can be very good if well regulated.

The Longines used to be an ETA 2892/A2 I think that's also used in much more expensive watches, so a good solid movement. A very good watch. Nicely made and well priced.

Whichever you get, get it on the metal bracelet if you can as it's usually cheaper to buy an extra leather or rubber strap later if you want to change the look and feel.

Thanks for this. I'll update when i've seen all 3 in the flesh side by side.

We are here to happily give advice, but that doesn't mean you don't have to do some legwork before spending a significant amount of money. It's really the wrong attitude towards buying a watch that in the end should be a posession that means something to you and reflects your own taste.

Just google the difference between automatic watches and quartz watches, read the articles, look at photos of automatic movements. As for the Gshock... really its better you figure that out for yourself because its actually pretty obvious, but just think about what other watches can do that stuff for a tenth of the price and what the resale value would be in 2 years. Not to mention what it weighs. And go and try stuff on in local shops, dont rely solely on online photos.

Im not trying to be harsh, but we are all adults here and its at least expected that you do some of the research based upon the suggestions people make, and its down to you to take some responsibility and get yourself informed at least to some degree before spending a significant amount of cash. Just spend a few hours reading, it will be worth it.

Thanks for these comments.

I shall scold myself for the rest of the day.

No necessary, but don't underestimate how interesting it is to learn more about the dream watch you are eventually going to buy. The more you learn the more you suddenly start to notice in the watches you see, and it all helps to refine your taste. :)

Do you have an preference on the style of the watch?

I've got a couple of longines watches posted somewhere in this thread in that price range. I think they're the hydra conquest and conquest classic. 1k answer 790 paid for them. Prefer the 790quid one if I'm honest but both decent watches.

i've already got my dream watch - as indicated in an earlier post!

I didn't want to appear flippant, but this purchase will essentially be "free", hence me requesting ideas for recommendations. I already own a Chronograph, a cheap auto diver and a dress watch.

My post was really asking what people would recommend around that budget, regardless of style.

Thanks

I guess at least it has a few gimmicks. What I really don't understand is people paying a grand for a quartz TAG F1.

Can't you flog the card and put the money you get from that sale into something...better than a 1k G Shock? If you've already got your dream watch then use the cash to have 'free' servicings for that watch for many a year!
