Ok, so the new Mario footage has swayed me. It was always a matter of time!

Two questions - how necessary is the pro pad? It grates a little to buy a new one as I have a virtually unused WiiU pro pad sitting around, but will stretch if it makes that much difference. And do you guys tend to prefer playing as a handheld when at home or on the tv? I'm half tempted to just treat it as a handheld bedroom/loo/holiday/commute machine.
 
I wouldn't say a pro pad is necessary I don't have one , I find the joy con grip is pretty comfortable for me .. although I am debating on a pro controller for splatoon 2 !

Absolutely loving arms atm wether it's handheld or on the tv , motion controls work A treat in docked and it's even good using buttons ...

Making my lunch hour go by way too quick though :D

Either play with the joy cons in your hands or buy a pro controller the grip is awful mine when back into the box and its staying their. The pro controller is a great controller i would give it 10/10 if it had analogue triggers.

I just use the grip. I haven't tried the pro pad to say if it's worth it or not, but haven't felt it necessary when using the grip. I also bought the charge grip and a set of joycons, so now have 2x 'normal' pads and 4x joycons. Works well for MK8D etc.

Our Switch is used a lot in all modes. My son is playing Arms onscreen using motion controls, I've played it on TV with a grip, and he's even played it tabletop mode so he can use the motion control still.

I found with other games, it's meant I just play whenever I want. I take it to bed, I avoid watching Eastenders etc. I played a lot of Zelda in handheld and play MK8D in handheld a lot as well. The Switch goes everywhere now. I even played the Arms testfire when camping, tethered to my 4G.

Completely agree. The only downside, thinking about it, is I wish the analogues on the joycon were a bit more 'flexible'. Hard to describe.

Buying the pro controller for me was a luxury rather than a necessity and it is very nice but it's not needed.
It comes down to personal preference though; as ak22 said, some can't stand using the included joycon grip attachment for a normal pad layout, I found it fine tbh but it's not as slick or ergonomic as a pro controller.

If you think you'll be spending a lot of time playing it on the TV then I'd say go for the pro controller as you'll get you money's worth, but if you're using it handheld 90% of the time then it's probably a waste.

The Switch looks and plays great handheld btw and is probably what tipped me over the edge to pick one up in the end, as the flexibility is what I like and having those quality games on the go if you want them. Sharing a main TV at home makes the handheld a great option when someone else is watching something or you just want a quiet gaming session with headphones on or away from the TV/house - played some Arms out in the garden the other day while enjoying the sun. :)
 
I just found the grip to small and the button layout to crammed, the right analogue stick directly below the buttons felt odd, the hand hand grips were to small.

The pro pad is much better than the grip., but not great. I'll happily use it if I need to. But my first choice will alaways be the pro pad.

At home, work doesn't allow electronic devices. Otherwise I'd become even less of an asset :p
 
I can definitely see that. I'm not a little bloke by any means, but I don't have big hands.

At least you get a grip free, so you'd quickly figure out whether it was for you or not without buying a Pro controller.

How do you find the analogue movement on the pro? Is it more like a DS4 or Wii U Pro? It's the only thing I've disliked about the joycons.
 
Pro Controller is so good. The feel is nice, the size is right and the battery charge is incredible. It's my favourite current controller (though I don't have the XB Elite one). I use the grip if playing local MP but it's nowhere near as comfortable as the pro.

You could get by without it, though.
 
It's also comfy enough with a joycon in each hand I played MK8 the other day like this and found it just as easy ...

If your not going to use the grip I'll take it off your hands ? I've 2 more joycons so would be better for 2 player games with the wife :D

Do you use the pro controller when playing in handheld mode then as well or just when playing on the tv ?
