this is actually pretty strong evidence that drivers aren't working correctly. Maybe Amd intentionally gimped Fe so it won't turn into some beast gpu that can do both pro and gaming on higher levels, therefor killing their pro line. Makes sense actually, imagine Titan being as good as Quadro line in pro apps while performing beastly in games. Nobody in their right mind would buy Quadro

But the Pro part of the card isn't certified so if you use Pro applications that need certification you have to look at the card that's going to be released later in the year. What i'm trying to say it's not a true Pro card.

Correct, Frontier Edition is nor certified, it's only "optimized" for it.

Developers, and creators working with design tools who want the superior performance and are fine with not having application certification. Those who wish to have certified app support can turn to the “Vega” versions of Radeon™ Pro WX coming Q3, 2017

Before you pre-order, however, there’s one big caveat. Although AMD touts the card as ideal for “innovators, creators, and pioneers of the world,” the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition will lack application certification, a factor that is crucial to many who work with content creation software and something typically found in high-end professional GPUs like the Quadro and FirePro lines.

For those hoping for Vega-based professional cards sporting certification, the Vega Frontier Edition product page teases the launch of the Vega-powered Radeon Pro WX in Q3 2017.

Note that the Frontier Edition will do so with pro-optimized software support, though the drivers for the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition won’t actually be fully certified.

only have 2 drives, and no overclock on my CPU as of yet..

Really?
The FE benchmarked has a TDP of <300W while the TDP of the water-cooled FE is <375W.
We don't know the specs of the RX yet, clockspeed etc but it does seem Vega requires a lot of power and runs quite hot.
If you want to overclock you have to allow some headroom.

Best to wait for official reviews of the FE to see how much power it actually requires.

yeah, good idea. im after a blower styler cooler for my setup, so hopefully they will be decent considering the hype around cooling and wattage issues.

What is the point of the frontier edition?

Cheap ass non-certified workstation card for £999; it compares well against the Quadro P5000 which is £1900 but actually has certification and support.

it's about as pro as a titan, it's for deep learning and some home workstation use.

i.e a prosumer card.

as mentioned the FE doesn't have ECC memory, doesn't have pro certified drivers, it's not a pro card, that's the firepro and other several thousand pound gpus that are.

Meh.... Go and add the components yourself and see what you will need for your system

Don't forget a good quality power supplies are capable of delivering a bit more power than what is advertised too.
Side note but I wouldn't trust a power calculator on a website run by a company with a vested interest in flogging more powerful, more expensive power supplies.

Let's be honest, the point of the FE card is to say they met their H1 release date promise. Vega clearly isn't ready yet; it's not suitable for gaming and not certified for professional use. It sadly looks like we have more months to wait.

Why are most you guys getting on the hate wagon so fast based on Gaming? We was clearly told not to Judge FE Vega for Gaming and to wait for RX Vega and then we should on a gaming leave have the right to rip Vega apart for the good or bad.
FE isn't just for gaming and its main focus isn't gaming either yet has I skip though this thread to see only it get torn a new one based on just gaming? Lool
Lets look at it from another point of view here is a guy on Reddit claiming he a develpoer and that hardware on the FE will reduce gaming performance and this is why we all should just chill and wait couple more weeks before the Doomed Wagon starts :D #chill

Hi I'm a game developer. There's multiple features the Frontier Edition has over RX that will slow it downself.Amd

Most of these relate to data integrity controls, for example ECC memory. These are hardware level and can't be "turned off" in drivers for example in "gaming mode". These increase latencies and take cycles in the GPU core and memory controller leading to a performance hit.

Woke up to see everyone freaking out, and just wanted to share that bit of information. Assume that with a proper cooler and these things gone, performance will be at least 20% better than it is now on the RX Vega.

Now, feel free to continue freaking out.

EDIT: this is not saying RX Vega will be good price/performance. Just that it'll perform a chunk better than the Frontier Edition in regular consumer applications.

EDIT 2: explaining how I got to these numbers

Assuming that on average the vega FE runs at about 1450Mhz core freq when you include the times it turbos to 1600Mhz. AIB cards (or consumer liquid loop like Fury X?) will keep the card cool enough to run at 1600Mhz without throttling. Half of the performance will be from that.

Other half is the general performance hit you see from those kinds of enterprise features on cards.

EDIT : this is also not including any future driver enhancements.

EDIT 3: this still makes the prospects for RX Vega underwhelming, just not total fire and brimstone. Also perf/watt would still be pretty bad.

EDIT 4: I will smash my Fury X with a hammer on stream if I'm wrong
