Wrong way around. For the Titan cards, they are primarily gaming cards, that's their main function, but they have the power to do other stuff. Whereas for the Vega FE it's a card focused for pro work which you can game on. And AMD have made that very clear, if you want to primarily game then wait for RX Vega.

AMD already have the PRO series which is meant for that - its for content creators who might want to game a bit too and has certified drivers. So now,we have fully pro FirePro,semi-Pro Pro,no-Pro Frontier Edition and zero-Pro gaming cards. I mean the FE must be some weird non-gaming niche as it is quite blinged out.

From a gaming standpoint, the performance of the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition did not light the stage on fire. In general, our game benchmarks put the Vega FE somewhere between the GeForce GTX 1070 and the GTX 1080.


Looked at solely through the lens of a professional user that is only tangentially interested in gaming, AMD can claim the product to be a success. For $999 the Vega Frontier Edition offers high levels of performance in some of our tested workloads from SPECviewperf, LuxMark and Cinebench. Our testing obviously isn't comprehensive due to time constraints, but it is a good indicate that AMD was right to target this product and this price at that kind of user. But Vega FE does well in these cases not because of the raw power of the GPU, but rather because NVIDIA has gated the performance between GeForce and Quadro. Regardless of how or why, the truth resides in the numbers. But that also is true for gaming use cases...the truth resides in the numbers.

For some users, the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition graphics hardware represents a professional level of performance at a lower price that utilizes the AMD software ecosystem. For others, it is simply a bellwether for the coming Radeon Vega consumer graphics cards. For the gamers out there, reading this and hoping to be uplifted and excited about the RX Vega product, it’s a tough sell, no getting around that. There is still potential for the hardware, despite the much higher power consumption that it requires over competitive GeForce options, if the Radeon Technologies Group is willing to price it to make an impact. We still have 4+ weeks to wait and find out, and for AMD to come up with its plan to bring Vega to the gaming market.

For now, we will continue to plug away at the Frontier Edition hardware to see what we can learn between now and then.

to be fair, he has said hundreds of times they are GAMERSnexus, their primary focus is gaming, that's why even when cards like the titan Xp launched he said "I doubt Nvidia will send us one as we're a gaming channel and would never recommend a card like this for gaming"

at the end of the day in those initial benchmarks the ryzen was in line with an i5, so he was being technically correct in calling in that.

but, that was the 1800x, and it was losing to a cpu half it's price in games, when he reviewed the 1700 he said it was much much better price to performance, but again noted he wouldn't recommend it for gaming because the r7s were aimed at content creators.

AMD actually demoed Frontier with Threadripper for Blender at their last event. Was a massive showcase about their new Pro Renderer for it and other software as well.

Yet,it crashes with Blender?? This is like someone has basically ignored the driver team and decided to just launch it anyway.

What are they achieving with this - there seems to be not much stock of it,so it can't be about making loads of dosh. This seems almost like another Fury X level launch when they launched it half finished,ie,the QC was not actually properly completed.

He said something along the lines of "a Core I5 for gaming, a Core I7 for everything else". I thought this was harsh but fair given the results in the games tested at launch. Things have improved significantly since then and he's admitted as much in follow up tests and articles. He's a very thorough reviewer, one of the best out there.

Blender doesn't need special drivers. cycles has always not worked properly on AMD cards

I know right, AMD even told PcPer the gaming mode/drivers are not comparable to Radeon RX; yet didn't put out a statement.

Now their Frontier drivers are crashing on one of the main software packages they showcased it on. :(

Also you're insulting the Fury X comparing them. The Fury X was faster than the 290 and 290X, along with old GTX 970 at least :p
Frontier can't even blow past the Fury X and 1070 in most tests.
 
In the end it doesnt really matter. NVIDIA are probably laughing at AMD right now looking at the current state of AMD's lineup and their soon to be released Volta cards. Hate to say it but Vega is irrelevant at this point. Even if AMD is aggressive with pricing, NVIDIA will be more than happy to lower prices after a year of milking customers and it would still be a better buy looking at TDP. I always thought GTX 1080 performance was the worst case scenario but AMD proved me wrong.
