How Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are hurting gamers

Bitcoin reminds me of religion. A lot of hype, a lot of people "not wanting to miss out". But essentially, there is nothing there. No point.

lol tell that to everyone who made thousands, hundreds of thousands and the few who made millions from it.

Bitcoin mining itself isn't very profitable unless you can do it on a large scale but to say there's nothing in it is nonsense.

These cards are going to be abused within an inch of failure....then dumped on secondhand markets which will in turn depress sales of post-bubble cards.

Probably also giving the manufacturers lots of warranty headaches as the failures are likely to be higher due to the environment they have been used in often with modded firmware.

I had an order in (mid June) ...but have now cancelled as seems no chance of it being filled before the next gen...and I don't want to be buying a card which will by the time it arrives have a reduced resale value.

Not really good for gamers or normal enthusiasts.

whats worse is the members market. people on here sell cards for a lot cheaper than ebay. miners are buying up these cheap cards stopping gamers from using them to game on. members market should have restrictions put on it for miners

i got questioned by a mod for buying 4-5 mobile phones over a period of 3 years from the members market. yet these guys are allowed to buy 7 graphics cards over a period of a couple of months without any restrictions.

Totally totally missing my point. Plenty people have made money from religion too. That's not my point.

The MM isn't over run by miners. In fact, there's been a lot less GPU's on sale recently than in the past. The MM doesn't have the volume to attract miners. There's a fair bit of hysteria going on here.

The profitability is already starting to diminish, and soon miners will be offloading cards to grateful second hand buyers... At which point everyone can stop moaning about the unfairness of miners inflating the price, and get back to moaning about the unfairness of Nvidia inflating the price.

the reason why less are going on sale is because ebay is offering a tonload of more money.

when a genuine person decides you know what i'll sell to the community. the miners on here snap them up. i've seen cards getting snapped up on the MM yesterday within 5 mins of going live. one of them bought 2 cards. another bought his 7th 1070

Yes, and I was on the verge of buying a 970 yesterday when it became clear the price would get inflated. The seller actually agreed a price with someone and then another guy offers more and the seller then switched to that person. Out of order and something I personally wouldn't do. However, all within the rules so it is what it is.

I actually sold a BTC motherboard and CPU the other week for a price I was asking in 2014, I could have got a lot more but that's just how I personally like to do things.

Like I said, it'll all turn full circle soon.

Hahaha :D

All us non-mining gamers just need to forget about buying GPUs until the miners have had their fill. You just can't compete with their tenacity. They will scour the net for cards 24/7 and snap up every last one.

C'est la vie.

It's amazing how fond you become of your current card when your chosen upgrade GPU were still £50-£75 over-priced despite OCUK's offer of a huge discount via code.

In fairness that's not miners you're referring too, it's the gamers/hobbyists who tried to jump on the ship long after it had sailed just like in 2014. Once the profitability falls they will sell up to cut their losses as before because they don't understand mining, whereas the real miners will hold their cards until they break then bin them (or fix them if it's something cheap/simple like a worn out fan) as they always have done.

Yeah I need to upgrade because I normally play CS:GO but I've just got into PUBG and my card can't cope. so I want a better one but at the moment it's stupid pricing I'm better off waiting 6 months

yeah i saw that too, a bidding war erupted over a GPU, never seen that before either.

I think it was you I sold my 290 to for £105. But I know for sure it was clean, just maybe a little dust in hard to reach places. Was the MSI Gaming one. Could have got double that for it had I hanged on for a bit but who would have known. I had a GTX 1080 at the time and thought I would keep that, but my plans changed.

No big deal though, I ended up buying a R9 Nano for £160 here after selling my 1080 and then selling it for around double that and then recently buying a 7970 for £55 which will do the job until I either get a Vega or Volta :D

No these two were off Ebay. Yours ended up in my brothers PC for a bit IIRC.

Nothing there, no point? I'm curious of those trying it at home what their daily meter readings are...

@Psycho Sonny What is your system spec?

Tis the time to sit, wait, and reflect.

Wasn't that what they called scalpers?

Yup, thanks to mining graphics cards are more expensive today than when they launched nearly a year ago? Crazy time in the GPU space.

Not liking the RRP, let alone the price hike Brexit and Mining have caused. Has allowed certain retailers to hike prices to crazy levels.

Considering the move to an Xbox One X when they launch, maybe come back to high end PC space in few years when things have settled? Will enjoy my 1080 Ti until then though xD

Well, we're supposed to sink with Brexit from what everyone says.
