Recent approach to forum moderation has reduced thread quality + fun factor

I don't want to criticize this forum as I still think it's a great place, but things obviously have changed around here since the old 'Spie' days, I have always classed myself as someone that leaned quite heavily on the left side of the political spectrum but for some reason I really appreciated the right sided political nature of the forum in the old days, it had a certain satire about it, I just think 'liberalism' in general is starting to take over the internet, look at the recent General election exit poll on here, I think that says it all really, I wouldn't even call myself a lefty anymore, the landscape has changed so much.

I preferred it back then, there were better arguments from the 'right', the forum imo is far more right leaning now, but the discussions are not of the quality that they one were, and the respect isnt there from both sides, it all gets abit petty very quickly, but thats society in general.

Aren't a lot of the old threads being posted on by bots?
I haven't been paying that much attention but did notice a lot of them were done by new users with the same first name / last name structure for their username.

The moderation on here is generally OK. It's just when certain mods take it upon themselves to make up their own rules as they go along and lock/delete posts/threads purely because they disagree with them personally rather than them being in contravention of any forum rules, or when certain members are allowed to get away with posting things that others get warnings for that it starts to be a problem.

As has been mentioned, having deleted posts/threads show the reason to regular users is being investigated. I think this one slipped us by as to mods that particular functionality looks exactly the same in the new forum as it did in the old. Obviously there is testing but sometimes incorrect assumptions are made.

I dunno if I'd say moderation here is heavy, but it's just enough to not stifle open discussion whilst at same time not letting things descend into chaos.

Politics threads generally get heated as hell and they only step in when there is just blatant trolling/abuse. Other than that posters can have a go at each other and be at each others throats. I love it, I sit back sip on my tea and get to enjoy some controversy.

There's always been pretty heavy moderation here compared to other places, I haven't noticed much difference tbh

It's over the top most of the time and at the end of the day it simply comes down to mods personal political views which cloud their judgement, let's face it nobody but nobody is impartial it just doesn't make sense to even think it.

I don't think there are many light hearted or funny threads anymore, there used to be a decent amount of intentional funny or unintentional funny threads . If someone does try to start one it's full of people replying "lul wut" and "in before lock" instead of actually trying to contribute / having a laugh.

I think most of the genuinely interesting posters have grown up and moved on.

The "old guard" who are left have to put up with a growing population of **********, militant atheists and fascist which just doesn't make for interesting reading anymore.

Don't think it's an issue of moderation - more a reflection of the changing nature of GD.

might be helpful if the OP could link to/give an example of a thread he considers 'fun' that he perceives isn't likely to be tolerated these days (I'm not suggesting he necro anything but just post a link)

if he genuinely believes that such a thread wouldn't now be allowed then perhaps a mod could comment, it might well turn out that his view is based on a false assumption

without examples the premise in the OP is just a bit of a rant, I don't think there is a massive change in moderation - like most forms it is run by volunteers/amateurs and some will (subjectively) be good others will be a bit inconsistent/naff and let bias etc.. get in the way - that is just the nature of heavily moderated forums in general, the alternative where you don't have much moderation would probably come with other complaints about how much is allowed etc... and probably wouldn't be suitable for association with a retail business

I have this viewpoint too. I can never be bothered to question things though. Sometimes I see threads locked / deleted for being pointless according to the mod who took action only for a mod to start a totally pointless thread not long after. Life's too short to worry about it though, the dynamics of the forum will change over the years that's just how it is and if we don't like it we don't have to use it.

I have seen threads deleted or closed now and then that could have been fun and the reasons given gave me a sense that it was a unilateral decision made by a mod because it wasn't to their personal taste or maybe they weren't in the mood rather than take a step back and let it run if no forum rules are being broken , sure some threads are nonsense drivel but these can have some of the funniest comments and those that don't like it don't have to participate.

Anyways it's not something that affects me that much, just an observation.
