Hey Gregster, sure the initial 'results' for big desktops are not great but as I already pointed to earlier in the thread, the main thing AMD needed to fix is competition in the laptop space. With a 1080+Intel quad+Gsync Alienware laptop costing the thick end of £3k inc. (razor equivalent is £4k) I really am desperate to see AMD to launch anything in the same ballpark as the 1080. They have the CPU, the display tech and everything they need to get a competitive mobile product out there for 2018.

Vega never did and does not need to be 1080ti or Volta speed because mobile requirements are different *unless* you really need the best possible mobile VR experience and I can totally understand this as an edge case.

The only disappointment I have is that the Vega thermals appear so big that if they stick a full fat gaming Vega into a laptop that it will throttle pretty hard and also, in terms of timing, they might be up against Volta once the AMD mobile solution is launched.

I really don't want to be paying so much money for my laptops and this is down to Nvidia and Intel having no competition. I can't wait for Vega to launch and I would be aghast if it would have been cancelled.

Unless RX Vega sip's a lot less power it won't be a good laptop option.

The Video was 100% accurate though. How can people not see it?

It said Voltage, they tried to cover up Voltage. Why? Because Vega will need it's own 1200W PSU to run.

Overclocking dual Vega XTX on a single PSU.

:D :D :D

People keep saying about compute being more important for AMD to make sales. However, if AMD actually produced a killer gaming card, then sales would be increased big time and it WOULD be important. Profit is profit.

This guy is going to be ok but the rest of us are screwed :(

The Vega is going onto a cpu core some time so its going to be modded a lot in various iterations apparently. Whats the max power draw on a AM4 socket :p

interesting

That idea of it being:
  • Cutdown Vega vs 1070
  • Full air-cooled Vega vs 1080
  • Watercooled overclocked Vega vs 1080 Ti
Is kind of interesting and does make sense. And it will ultimately make a fair enough point if they say you get the same/better experience, but for less money, if you buy a GPU + sync monitor from the respective companies.

But does this mean they're collecting actual statistics from people at these events? I know there's strong reports the 'left system' is the better one, but are they actually getting attendees to write that down somewhere?

And they could then release the answers at SIGGRAPH.

It's in apples Macbook at the end of the year so apple disagrees.

edit - nvm its the iMac Pro. Their desktop computer. I swear i saw some where saying Macbook too. Ill have to go look.

Polaris would be okay for a laptop, Vega may be too but in what form is anyone's guess at this point.

The Zen + Vega APUs would be basically perfect for Apple's laptop needs. Good CPU + good compute GPU + small form factor and power draw. That's exactly what they want.

Also it'll be kinda funny if they fit one of those in the next MacBook Air. Due to the crazy amount of optimisation in iCut Pro (or lack thereof in Vegas and Premiere Pro), a Zen + Vega APU would likely be faster for editing than a £1,500 8-core + 7 Tflop GPU Windows PC with Premiere.

Interesting analysis on the commentary.

But, I found the video of the event disconcerting and creepy. The image of the two bored, nervous looking young women standing there seemed exploitative. If that's AMD's idea of marketing then count me out - though I appreciate it's a wider issue in the tech sector and not just AMD...

It's 'Battlecruiser 3000AD' all over again - and still nothing has changed.
