Maybe they don't want rapid response from nvidia and want to get underestimated cause of that ? It worked with Intel seems Nvidia also is getting cocky maybe it is indeed the best strategy :p

Maybe they don't want rapid response from nvidia

The most rapid response would be price cuts and that can be announced pretty much instantly so nothing to gain from sandbagging there and it is a pretty safe bet nVidia are in a position to respond pretty quickly with the technical lead they have at the moment so again nothing to be gained by sandbagging at this point - maybe with a few months lead time sandbagging would have made sense to minimise the time nVidia had to run interference but there is nothing really to gain at this point versus the damage in PR they are incurring.

Why would AMD sandbag? What do they have to gain from it?
It doesn't seem like they're being sensible about it, however it's the only thing that makes logical sense with the context of the size of the GPU and potential power draw.

It just doesn't make logical sense that they can get so much right with Ryzen, and so much wrong with Vega.

Bits and Chips are extremely hopeful with Vega.

ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN :D:D:D:D:D. I am not getting on this one.

It makes perfect sense, like when they had good GPUs and terrible CPUs. They are completely separate teams and architectures.

Nah they aren't sandbagging, at this point in time it would be of no benefit. What he means by sandbagging I think, is that they would have demoed the cut down Vega while everyone was thinking it was the full Vega
, I wouldn't really call that sandbagging per say... And I don't imagine that the full Vega will be leaps and bounds faster than the cut down Vega, just by looking at their past GPUs, the 470 wasn't massively behind the 480, the fury X wasn't massively faster than the Fury, nothing like the perf difference between a 970 and 980 or 1070/1080

Unintentional because their gaming drivers are still pants? Who knows. At least someone is still very hopeful for it haha.

With AMD(or even ATI) anything is possible. They had the lemon which was the 2900XT which everybody thought would be the most awesome card ever, and then when everybody thought they were finished, they brought out the HD4870,which even a week before launch nobody could figure out how fast it was.

Its more ups and down than a TV drama LOL.

Not really. The GPUs were the only thing they had going for them for the most part, at least in terms of consumer perception.

This big effort they've made to turn around their CPU division wouldn't make any sense for them then to release a turd of a chip that hasn't progressed at all since their previous architecture of 2 years ago.

I'm not saying that it isn't the case, it could very well be. It is just bizarre, doesn't make sense and is at complete odds at what they've been doing elsewhere. Stuff doesn't really add up, but I suppose we'll see soon.

Wait till the real launch when they reveal it was the cut down vega going up against the 1080 in the demos

It's definitely possible but I have been semi on the hype train for the last few launches. This time around I am expecting the worst so won't be disappointed if the worst happens. Tbh Nvidia launches seem to surpass what I think will happen and they keep pretty quiet. When the facts arrive I have been semi impressed or really impressed until the pricing is announced. Hoping it's the same here minus the pricing.

Is there definitely a higher and lower card being released at the same time, even that much would be surprising to me. Maybe they want to be selling the lower card with less memory and thats the motivation for a dual release.

I had the 2900xt, twice over. A 3870 mod I think it was and I still have the 4870. The connection for all those and now is the memory was kinda special, so 2900xt had that giant 512bit memory interface. I dont know it ever did any good ( I realised the game just wanted nvidia later) but somehow I thought it might. Then 4870 was the first with GDDR5 which has been used forever and now Vega is making a big deal out of HBM2 which many say is going to be a waste of time.
So we'll see where it sits in that spectrum of performance vs expectation

I think with only a few weeks left,I think we will soon find out anyway!

One thing I did mention earlier,is some people have hinted that the Vega FE is using 8GB HBM2 modules made by Samsung, and these are probably early production ones(Samsung has only really recently announced them).

That probably means Hynix is supplying the 4GB modules for the gaming cards I suspect.

Only one reason to sandbag....

Makes it easier to teabag. :p

Haha i aint getting on the hype train but we cant let the thread be all Doom and Gloom for AMD :)
I do agree with you on Nvidia launches while the pricing has jumped performance has jumped up a good deal too
