I hope it is more than just words - but remember all the twitter hype between AMD and Dice leading upto the 290 series and Fury series launch...

Some of that was about Mantle though, 290 was a good card just had a **** stock cooler.

The 290 series would have been one of the best cards AMD had launched for years,if they had not hobbled it with a **** poor stock cooler and then had Nvidia sending out cards they bought, and telling reviewers they "found" it throttling.

Wasn't about Mantle - I can't remember which comments were about which launch now but things were said like "its a generation ahead of anything nVidia have" and "nVidia are going to be decimated maybe never catch up" one of the conversations was since deleted but I think the other is still there.

The 290/X wasn't a bad card (with the cooling and black screen issues sorted/cards not affected by it) but they were hyping it up as something way better than the card that launched.

They did the same with Fiji and Polaris, hyped them up to impossible levels. They have done the same with Vega with the whole "poor Volta" BS.

The impossible??
Thats what caught my eye too. Pretty bold statement to be honest

This has clearly happened because AMD need to release something to meet shareholders expectations for earnings and the result is a unfinished (or should I say unsuitable) product.

There will be people that buy this simply because "its new" not everyone researches prior to a purchase so it will earn AMD money even if its deemed a failure by techies.

Similar with the new intel cpus every year that are barely better than previous models.

I see the smaller Vega competing favorably with the 1070 and big Vega(air cooled) being a tad slower than the 1080 at release. Water cooled big Vega competing against overclocked 1080 cards. Hopefully the performance will increase when more mature drivers become available. Hopefully Navi will be much less power hungry than Vega.

Nah, from the Vega FE benchmarks they only need ~10% gain from drivers to make the air cooled version comfortably in the max-clocked 1080 zone.

The FE Vega beats a ~1900 MHz 1080 in games favourable to AMD, while fluctuating its clock from 1440-1528 MHz. And loses to the 1080 in games not favourable to AMD.

So if they can get a solid 1630 MHz (the rumoured clock), and get 10% from drivers they're fine on that front.

And the FE cooler is super pathetic. It only has 1 small blower-fan and a tiny heatsink. It doesn't actually appear to be a hot card, so I'd be confident the Sapphire triple-fan design will handle it no problem.

Lol at the generation ahead. In some ways they were not lying as nvidia's next cards were the gtx980/970 and as it turns out they are now more than a match. Took a while though :D:D:D

Really want to find out what the impossible is though. Is it blowing up a 1000w power supply in cf.

Seriously hope they have been sand bagging. We keep hearing that the FE is not using all the new features so there is a glimour of hope. My expectations at this minute are somewhere around 1080. The impossible would be beating 1080ti/Titan Xp. I really can't see that though but it would be hilarious if they were holding back to finalise a proper driver and laid the smackdown. I would literally just about bet all the money in my bank against it.

The impossible??

All aboard... The hype train!!!! :p

Making ~62% of the die do nothing?

Since Vega is 484mm^2 and a shrunk FuryX would be ~298mm^2 and would clock higher due to Dennard Scaling.
Lol!!

This is why until today I cannot wrap my head around big Vega not competing again Titan XP as I had predicted. 1080 performance should be for cutdown Vega for god sakes.

I suspect it may be some kind of 60fps/4K benchmark using crossfire in a scenario that wasn't possible before.

For selfish reasons I kind of hope they do - as nVidia is holding a lot of cards at the moment and it would force them to play it and actually be worth spending money on something as an upgrade.

Even now a fury x comletes and beats a 980ti which is on par or the 1070 ever so slightly beating the 980ti. So how on earth does the cur down struggle to beat the 1070? Makes zero sense yea and full fat vega struggles to keep up with a 1080?! Id love for amd to release the cards abd be like we had stuff disabled in drivers but heres release drivers have fun. Doubt it tho.

I agree. in compute it performs great v the Titan Xp. Why is the power so lost when it comes to games. A good compute card is usually a decent gaming card where fp32 is concerned. Vega just seems to make no sense as they have added in gaming features and upgrades yet they don't seem to be doing nothing in the slightest. Yea some features seem to be ahead of there time as usual and might need devs to code for it but i find it odd that the design offers nothing at all over fury X clock for clock. Still have a little optimism because of this but really not expecting much more than what we are seeing atm. Since Fury X it's been far to much hype with no pay off.

Nah FX puts up a good fight in some select games and closes the gap at 4K quite a bit (though often without as good frametimes) but overall its still a fair bit slower than an overclocked 980ti or 1070.

EDIT:: It does boggle my mind though as on paper with a slightly more focused render path (so it can be loaded up better and run higher frequencies) and 1-2 other tweaks including to the memory plus shrink it should easily compete with anything nVidia have out at the moment.
