If with using HBM, they are sucking 440w+, i can only imagine how much they'd suck with the higher powered GDDR, so id say a GDDR Vega, won't happen.

Main difference would be bandwidth/watt - 8GB on the RX580 IIRC uses about 33 watt - the power supply for the HBM2 on the FE edition is specced for around 36 watt under nominal operation conditions (actual utilisation will be lower) though 8GB config would be less than that but probably not hugely so with a certain amount of static overhead, etc.

(In both cases there is another 10-13 watt as well tied into that from ancillary connections).

Vega would complete their line-up though wouldn't it ?

Vega XTX (AIO cooled)
Vega XT (Air cooled XTX, but with a lower TBP - ASIC)
Vega XL (a cut-down XT/XTX)

All are HBM2.

Then its Polaris, that was released June/August 2016, released again, April 2017, along with a new 550, that all use GDDR5.

580 (Previously 480)
570 (Previously 470)
560 (Previously 460)
550 (new)

And just how AMD could have prevented consumer sites from getting Vega FE?
By telling shops not to sell them to anyone not being in list of "AMD approved companies/persons" or by saying any site who reviews Vega FE stops getting any product samples/support from AMD?

Bet you would be picking up pitchforks and torches and screaming bloody murder then!

*sigh*

reviewers usually get their cards for free from AMD, the fact that so many reviewers have them indicates this happened with FE, some of them kick up a big stink when they get left out so we surely would have heard about it if AMD were not giving out review samples

the fact that AMD actively gave out FE cards to gaming sites shows what AMD's position on the FE and gaming is

how has amd been historically launching gpus?
do they always play close to chest and then magically launch with a good stockpile...
generally how is availability in the fortnight post-launch?

If recent years are anything to go by, not great. The Polaris 4xx launch was pretty bad, numbers were limited and when the AIB cards finally did turn up, it took more than a month for OCUK to clear all their orders due to lower than expected stock levels.

LOL, clutching at straws mate.

Vega isn't going to be a 1080Ti competitor, it's going to top out somewhere near 1080 perf.

Feel free to quote me on release day... (not 9 months later after they fix the drivers...)

I think RX Vega performance will range from around 1070 levels to between 1080 and 1080ti levels depending on which of the 3 versions you buy. Guessing they will do slightly better on DX12 and Vulkan games.

Price, haven't a clue, but, surely they know that they can't price them higher than the 1080TI, but the mining craze is messing with prices everywhere. So I am going to make a guess at $599, $499 and $399 for the three different cards. Don't know what that will work out at over here.

Yes, and that is if you want to primarily game then RX Vega is what you should buy, because the FE edition is aimed more at prosumers.

Wasn't it Pcper that had to buy their own cards?

okay so they just goofed up once.. it can happen sometimes
otherwise how has been their track-record.. they have some kind of priority, low rate arrangement with glofo, right? both companies are sponsored by the same shareholder Mubadala

Who got free Vega FE from AMD? every review I have seen they bought the cards.

Fiji was also pretty bad, late with very limited stock which lead to prices much higher than the faster 980ti.

For something that is supposed to be released soon I've seen very little in the way of stock leaks and retail listings, etc. which in the past has indicated limited launches. The few leaks/things said by AIBs seems to indicate there is low stock expectations.

EDIT: If the comment earlier on about mass production was right and not a misunderstanding, etc. then it would tend to indicate very low stock initially - possibly just risk production - with a 2-4 months delay to full volume. I hope for AMD's sake that isn't right.

If I remember correctly nvidia Ti and XP was also very limited in what was known outside of nvidia. No one expected the little Xp and even the Ti was a surprise.

If amd have managed to keep everything under lock down good for them I say
