on the models that support it (taking the optical drive bay out and installing a ssd)

Is raid0 worth it ? Speed increase for the cost (I understand no redundancy) but overall is apple raid reliable ?

Thanks

Nothing confirmed yet. Still looking but would be a 2011 or 2012 mbp with 8gb ram

Ssd would be 2x Samsung 850 evo 250gb, they go for around £60 each used.

Personally I don't think it's worth doing. Yes, you'll get a decent speed boost but it's not as though SSDs are slow anyway. I wouldn't like the additional risk that when one of them fails, you're going to have to go to your backups.

I don't think a five year old computer with a software RAID0 of SSDs is going to perform any better than a five year old computer with one SSD in.

I too think you are wasting your time for the potential ballache and would be going for a RAM upgrade instead. Have you used an older Mac with an SSD in it? You'll be pleasantly surprised at the speed of the thing.

I used to run all of my previous gen MB with a drive in the optibay - one problem I ran in to with all of them was a difference in performance between the normal drive bay and the DVD bay. Some machines - I can't remember which - would have issues with the SSD in the optibay for example.

I suspect you'll run in to issues tbh.

think you mean SATA2 and SATA3, ive read about this and only certain models from certain years have this issue

thanks all for the heads up, im tempted to give it a go, just to satisfy my curiosity :)

Nah, aware of that restriction Wrote about this a few times - here and here for example. Never had any reliable success with the setup you're suggesting, so I always ended up with the separate drives and using folder redirecting to put stuff where I wanted.
