I said at the time, if you're going to go with that type of advertising, you'd better totally crush the competition, or you look stupid and that you lied to your customers.

Dunno about lied to customers I think most people took it as a bit of a jab at nVidia rather than a commitment/promise - but the way they've handled PR over Vega IMO is pretty insulting towards their loyal customer base. If they are going to make a jibe like that they atleast need something that is reasonably competitive.

I really hope they do pull something out of the bag as it seems nVidia can already produce working Volta cards on 12FF risk production which likely puts them in a strong position for being able to produce next generation cards after Pascal or very optimised Pascal cards if they want and well on the road towards single digit nodes.

Some people cracking me up with lines like "AMD lied to customers" regarding the Poor Voltage thing. How is that lying? It was just a silly jab. Lying is what Nvidia did with the 970 and later got caught and had a lawsuit on their hands and ended up having to pay people, in USA anyway.

End of the day sensible people will be reading/watching reviews before they drop their money on Vega. Who in their right minds would have watched that video 6+ months ago and thought "right, Vega will be best GPU ever, two generations ahead of Nvidia, it will not only trounce Pascal, but beat Volta also! I am sold, not need for any more proof!" :p

I was an optimist when about a year ago I predicted big Vega might match or slightly beat a Titan XP, but even I never thought it would come close to Volta, let alone beat it.

An embarrassingly silly jab now by the looks of things (for AMD).

There are no two ways about it, they lied by implying that Vega was going to be competition for/beat Volta. In reality, it looks like it may struggle to even beat a 1080.

No, I said that if you have an ad campaign that gives a smackdown to your competitors and you don't follow-through, then it makes you look like you lied. More likely to be incompetence, but you still look like you were telling your customers you could do things that you couldn't.

Kind of like Corbyn and the tuition fees thing, there is a difference between alluding to a certain relatively open scenario and a committal to something specific but at the same time still a dubiousness to it.

Maybe it wasnt Vega they had in mind when jabbing Volta.

Maybe AMD are playing the Long Game. Maybe Vega is just another test bed for whats to come...Just like Fiji was for HBM. Navi + Ryzen + Infinity Fabric

Slowly Slowly Catchee Monkey ;)

If that is the case they need to get a move on - nVidia is basically 2 generations of hardware ahead of them at this point and well poised for launching into the single digit nodes with 7nm tapeouts commencing.

That would be a great example of giving yourself enough rope to hang yourself with.

There seem to be some monitors that have more flickering with freesync; I've not seen it at all with two 144hz screens, seems to be the lower range monitors more often!
Ok yes monitor is too important to skimp on, learnt that the hard way with ghosting on cheap monitors years ago.

How many generations were Intel ahead of AMD over the 10 years in the wilderness....and look what has happened now. :D

Slightly different situation though - Intel have been resting on their laurels for a long time, nVidia is still full speed ahead tech progression wise at the high end even if they are trickling out iterations to GeForce consumers :(
