2017 Holiday Thread

Back to Vietnam end of April (Ho Chi Minh, Hoi An, Da Nang, Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh,) 22 day adventure cant wait :D

Then looking at going to Prague in July and also want to fit in Budapest before the year over. :)

Holy quote resurrection Batman!

We're going to Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh 3 nights, Da Nang 7 nights, Hanoi 3 nights, Halong Bay 1 night) for honeymoon (splurging on premium economy seats) in October. How was your trip and got any tips?

How did you cope with Zica virus as we are looking to have a baby soon after we get back (unsure if you were worried about this)

Vietnam is amazing I have been twice now and my girlfriend is Vietnamese so I have seen quite a lot and been to mostly every district in Ho Chi Minh.

I recommend you go to Hoi an and I wouldnt do Danang for 7 nights there is a fair bit to see there and a nice beach but 3 or 4 days tops for Danang is reasonable.

I aso would say go to Ninh Binh I will email all information you need to your trust email also I recommend applying for the online Visa rather then going Visa on arrival route it will save you a lot of time.

As for Zika virus I didnt care to much I did not seem to get anything major and I travelled all over and went through many rice fields all I got is a bad belly for few days but that guaranteed in asia at some stage.

Interesting stuff.

Cheers for the info We got it as a package deal and I'm looking forward to just sitting on a beach doing nothing in Danang tbh lol

Ninh Binh looks interesting, we may make a trip :) my email is brentsa at hotmail dot com if trust isn't up to date (always had issues with it)

Secondly plan to hit Dubrovnik before the year out anyone been before recommend a place to stay?
We just got back from a week in Cavtat, Croatia which is a 35min boat ride from Dubrovnik. We wanted to chill and Cavtat fit the bill perfectly. It's quite a generic seaside/marina town with fairly decent restaurants (unfortunately most seem to agree the food in Croatia is a little disappointing when compared to the Italians over the water). We went over to Dubrovnik twice and agreed although it was great to see I don't think we would have enjoyed staying anywhere near the old town. You can see it in a day and it's just manic. That's coming from two Londoners; we go on holiday to get away from all that!

The only downside to staying in Cavtat is that it's a little out of the way to see any of the other Croatian islands. You can do some day trips but we just didn't fancy it. The one that was tempting was a day trip to Kotor in Montenegro but again, we just couldn't be faffed :p

EDIT: We stayed in Hotel Croatia. Terrible name but lovely hotel.

We're going to take rucksacks to Krakow and Prague and looking to get something lockable and anti-slash. Most covers look over the top obvious (steel mesh) so we were thinking about getting new rucksacks with protection built in.
Any suggestions?

I had a quick weekend trip to Paderborn (Germany) earlier this year for a Flight Sim conference; I'll be heading back to Germany (mainly Nürburgring) for a week in mid-September; and my gf has invited me to Iceland with her and friends in December so that should be pretty awesome too!

Been to BOS 5 times with work this year, SFO twice and DFW so far. Not enough points for a free return trip to JFK with BA yet :(

Hope by November I'll have enough points for 4 days in NY for me and the missus with BA/Marriott.

Will still have to pay the airfare tax which is many $$$

FFS. I booked my trip to South Korea and Shanghai yonks ago for September. Now Fatty Jong Il is kicking off with the yanks and everyone in the region are getting twitchy.

At least you can get a free ride home on a ICBM now save you a few pounds. To be fair he's been kicking off for a while its nothing new. People forget Obama had a ding dong with him not so long ago. Its just Trumps time to be on the end of sabre rattling. Only thing is this time round Trump is likely to give him a black eye where as Obama was just handbags at dawn.

My holiday's are finished for this year (April to June is the kid's break from school over here) and all I see on FB at the moment are my UK buddies jetting off somewhere.

I think I need to start thinking of our 2018 vacation fast to stop the envy!

Guess it's better putting it in here as I don't see a 2018 thread.

Looking at taking in New Zealand in March/April of 2018 for England's test tour, taking place in Auckland and Christchurch. Looking at flights right now (Momondo/Skyscanner/Kayak) and a multicity journey is coming at just shy of £850. Is this likely to drop anytime soon or go up? I don't travel too often so am a little out of my depth when it comes to booking stuff.

Cheerssssss

Want to go somewhere for a couple of weeks in October/November this year but so far haven't really come up with anything particularly interesting. Any recommendations?

Like wildlife and outdoors stuff, but happy to spend a couple of days in a city to break stuff up. Not interested in all inclusives/resorts. Probably looking somewhere warm, but not 100%

Unfortunately due to location Africa is out (flights are a nightmare) and we have plans for future trips to the Amazon and Indonesia (need 3 weeks for those), did Guatemala in April so not too keen on doing Central America again so soon.

I owe you a profuse and grovelling apology.
I read your second line quickly, as I am wont to do, and thought that it said that you were looking for a Blackpool holiday.
"Somewhere hot" prompted me to read it all again.
My initial thought was, "Blackpool? He's got to be kidding surely."
My commiserations to those of you to whom Blackpool appeals of course, but it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good, it means that the line at immigration control in Tampa FL. will be that much shorter if you're all happy to go to Blackpool.

I actually went to Blackpool last month for a weekend away! The place is a dump, and it's just not good. But, we enjoyed it for what it was and had a good laugh. The B&B was friendly, clean and the hosts were very good. The pleasure beach was quiet and good fun, with great weather. Walking along the front opened your eyes to all sorts! And then the drag show at Funny Girls in the evening was a riot. I would never go back, but if you've never been and go with the right attitude it's pretty good!

As per above I am still planning flights and stuff accordingly. For people who book through the flight comparison sites, how do you find your experiences with the travel agents? I'm reading about the ones I could possibly be using like TravelUp/Carlton Leisure/SkyTours and reviews seem to be less than desirable...

A mix of work and personal trips but nearly sorted now for the year...

September - Georgia, Azerbaijan + Russia
October - Iraqi Kurdistan
November - Ethiopia, Somaliland, Mogadishu + Djibouti
New years - Back to Kiev and Chernobyl then off to Lithuania and Estonia
Feb - Sudan and Qatar
April - Pakistan

My wife came up with an apartment she'd seen online last week, some 60 kms east of Faro, Portugal.
It reads good, we've been to the small town before, good bars, and most of all, good restaurants, so I checked out prices and availability for the first week in October, (booked up all September).
It is available, at £680, I can get flights from £90-£125, car probably £150 at a guess, so I figured around £1100 all in.
Spending money I never worry about, I don't budget for £XXX per day, just go to a restaurant, and eat what we fancy, same with bars, if I want a vodka and tonic or three, I'll have them.
However, it is one of my German grandsons birthday next Sunday, so when I went to the Post Office to get a stamp for his card, I bought a €20 note to put in the card, the rate was €1.04 to £1.00!
I'll still go, and we'll still eat and drink what we want, but when we were in Lanzarote last February, I was getting €1.18, so I can visualise a slightly chunkier credit card bill on our return.
I'll just remember my old dad's words, enjoy yourself while you have the chance, you're only here for seventy odd years, it ain't a rehearsal.
