John Lewis pulling a PR stunt I feel. My question is why only children?

Over the weekend, John Lewis announced that they would no longer use “boys” and “girls” labels on children’s clothing.

The progressive move was praised by many customers, who were happy to see a major retailer recognising the complexities of gender.

One gem from the comments section:

I hope other retailers are punished for perpetuating inequality and that John Lewis does well out of this. Children should be non-gender specific until they make a choice. Old fashioned dullards take note.

More shockingly, since when did the Independent start having ads with ridiculous titles?

"This woman delivered her own baby in the car. Then she realised something was different"
"He bought this cabin for 100 dollar and did this"
"If you own a computer your must try this game"

Shudder.

Following that logic to it's inevitable conclusion; why only children’s clothing indeed?

If I'm honest I don't really understand the decision or its actual impact. I presume the clothing sections will continue to be displayed in department stores? As a consumer, I need all the help I can get when finding the appropriate pants to purchase!

There's not going to be an impact really, only there is no boy/girl signs. Some people get so over the top offended when these pro- SJW sort of things happen... almost like they are triggered. :p

They could have at least done it for adults as well so I could browse the ladies underwear section without other shoppers assuming my gender

I don't have a problem with this. A lot of children's clothes are gender neutral anyway, in fact the only real dividing line which might raise eyebrows would be colour/pattern (some 4 year old lad wants to wear pink chinos fair play to him) and dresses/skirts (this probably isn't going to lead to an army of boys dressing in pinafores). From a logistics point of view this is cracking for John Lewis providing there's no backlash, no need to segregate stock areas, clothes can be displayed by type, opens up a wider range of products to consumers (if you hadn't been specifically told that a pair of sky blue trousers were for girls would you have an issue dressing your little boy in them etc), but that's if they're willing to really push it, chances are nothing will change except the in store branding and website subsections.

i don't think gender is about body shapes? :-/

we've got buttons and zippers on different sides for men and women, can't wait to see where they put them for gender fluids et al...

Why not have a boys section....a girls section and then a neutral section? This is just political posturing and trying to further blur the lines between men and women.

Why certain people think that men shouldn't be men and women shouldn't be women, ill never understand.

I don't know, if you have young daughters you will rapidly notice that everything aimed at girls is pink or purple and features ponies, or princesses. It annoys me no end, I try to avoid all that tat for my daughters the hyper stereotyping of gender roles at such young ages must be doing harm.
I wouldn't necessarily want absolute gender neutrality but girls in particular live in a culture that actively and aggressively streams them into a narrow World view at a very young age.
The BBC is very good on this regard genders are treated much more even-handedly, like I say I'm not promoting absolute gender neutrality, but the balance the market promotes is disgusting.

First John Lewis board member: GENIUS.

There are those who will not be happy until we are all wearing identical Maoist style baggy blue tracksuits.

So much Bat**** insanity! Must be chemicals in the water or something! :/
