Has Waitrose gone 'downmarket'?

Have you never been in one? It’s never full of fat tattooed slobs wearing pyjamas / tracksuits, so in comparison to any of the other supermarkets it’s fantastic.

Haha, I must admit I do tend to categorise supermarkets more on the clientele than the store itself and there's a definite pecking order, round here at least:

Waitrose > Sainsbury's > Tesco > Morrisons > ASDA > ALDI > Lidl

That's changed quite recently where I live. In a bizarre twist, all the upmarket types go to Lidl down the road instead.
Don't blame them - Lidl's food is amazingly good. Despite everyone knowing them, it still seems to be a hidden gem when it comes to grocery shopping. Don't knock them. It's the pretentious shops selling you a brand you gotta watch out for - just like everything else.
Very much this! The Stratford upon Avon Aldi carpark is full of upmarket motors , while the local Waitrose is full of unpleasant pretentious cretins.

People are tightening their belts a they feel the squeeze, no wonder they are shopping elsewhere.

You mean Aldi right?

:D :D :p

But yes, you're point is still correct.

My local Waitrose is too far to walk so I pop into the big Marks and Sparks for some of my shopping which seems OK. Generally full of elderly or middle class people and usually no chavs due to the price.

Asda is the worst imo, always full of mutants

I think it depends on the individial store. The Morrisons near me is definately much better than the Sainsburys, which is a bit of a dive.

Yeah it's great, and to be honest if you save money on groceries (we cut our bill by about 30%) then its extra money you can spend on things like nicer cars :D

It's a supermarket, they're all mostly the same. They buy big volume mass produced products for their many stores to sell at a competitive price. An "upmarket" Supermarket makes little sense, it's just an expensive supermarket with less choice. Booths is more "upmarket" IMO, but again, same problem, it's a supermarket.

Buying from your local butchers and shops for fresher local produce is what I'd call upmarket if you wanna feel like you're eating quality come tea time.

No-one does their big shop in M&S though. It's only for bits and pieces.

My local Waitrose is quite neat, there's a set of parking spots directly on the main road which are 2 feet from the front entrance. Means I can park up, get in the store, buy my stuff and walk to the smaller checkouts, pay with Android Pay, walk out and get in the car with immediacy. That's how supermarket shopping should be, efficient, effortless.

Wouldn't know, I use Aldi or Lidl for my weekly shop.

Haha, peasant!

I do the same :p ALDI Oranges are simply the best. I shop at every supermarket and have yet to find one that sells better oranges than ALDI. Their brioche loaf and buns are also second to none.

I flipping love oranges, and mangoes to the same extent.

Waitrose is a 2 minute walk from me.so inevitability I go there.

The food isn't great I'd say. Tesco finest pasta sauce for example is much better than waitrose standard and about the same price.
I wouldn't go there if it wasn't close.

Our Waitrose is in the town centre. So that's off limits (I've heard it aint that good anyway)

If you value your car you shop at Tesco Serpentine Green as they have VERY generous sized parking bays but ... It's Tesco !

We have Sainsbury , Iceland & Aldi @ Bretton Centre & Morrisons round the corner.
But...
Sainsburys has highly stressed car park drivers (road rage). We shop at Morrisons but the Oldsters will insist on blocking the doorway waffling !

Recent convert to Aldi, a lot of the copy brands are really good with some being better than the originals while costing far less. They get some nice things in as well cheap, had a lovely steak the other day which was a bargain.
Lidl doesn't have a great selection but good for cheap wine / booze plus they get some nice hardware bits in cheap.

They really show up the old big chains for charging way too much for inferior food but you still need them for some things.

Man I miss Asda :p

I loved asda, the fruit and veg was acceptable quality and cheap.
You could knock up a respectful salad for a quid or 2.

They opened a Waitrose near my mum's place. It lasted about 6 months. Now it's some bizzare middle Eastern owned supermarket packed to the ceiling with junk.

I find Lidl great. Fresh Veg/ Herbs last forever, especially compared to Tescos which barely last a couple days. Lidls chicken (even free range) is a let down though. However I get all my meat from The Great British Meat Company.
